From Story to Real-World Play 🪨🚚

We brought Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site outside, connecting a favourite story with the children’s love of cars and trucks.

When one of our friends noticed the dump truck, he placed a rock right onto the page—and a simple moment turned into “load and dump” play with a real dump truck nearby.

Books don’t have to stay at storytime. 📚 When children connect stories to their play, they build language, imagination, problem-solving and an understanding of the world around them.

One book. One rock. So much learning. ❤️

A new year at The Woods. 🌲

This week, we welcomed so many new friends into our Woods community — new children, new families, new classrooms and new relationships beginning to take shape.

And there really is no better way to become part of The Woods than to head out into them together.

To our returning families, welcome back. And to every child and family joining us for the first time: we are so happy you’re here.

Here’s to a year of muddy boots, big adventures, growing friendships and childhood spent outside.

Following Their Interest in Ants 🐜

The children’s growing curiosity about ants during outdoor play inspired today’s exploration.

An ant-inspired tuff tray brought together soil, magnifying glasses, ant images, pages from our homemade book, and photos of the children’s own ant discoveries.

By noticing what captures children’s attention, we can create opportunities for them to look closer, ask questions, make connections, and keep exploring. 🐜🔎

We have two spaces for four-year-olds available at The Woods in Quispamsis, beginning September 8 for the new school year.

Our Preschool program follows New Brunswick’s Curriculum Framework for Early Learning and Child Care, while bringing to life everything that makes Origins unique: days rich in outdoor play, exploration of our natural spaces, strong early literacy and language experiences, hands-on learning, meaningful relationships, and thoughtful environments that invite children to wonder, investigate and create.

And at The Woods, the outdoors really is part of the classroom. 🌲

Preschool is an important year! One for building confidence, independence, friendships and the foundations children will carry with them into school.

Water in Motion

We continued our Movement Through Nature inquiry by shifting our focus from the movement of air to the movement of water! 💧

The children were invited to scoop, pour, splash, and watch closely as water travelled across different surfaces. They experimented with pouring from different heights and angles, noticing where the water went, how quickly it moved, and what happened when they added more.

Through their exploration, the children investigated cause and effect, gravity, direction, and flow, while strengthening coordination and problem-solving skills as they filled, carried, tipped, and poured their containers.

Our reflective surfaces added another layer of discovery as the moving water caught the sunlight and changed what the children could see.

As our exploration continues, we’re wondering:

Look at that print.

Those leaves became butterflies. Millipedes. Spiders. Stick bugs.

Children observed carefully, compared shapes, noticed details, and represented what they saw. They strengthened the muscles in their hands, refined their pencil control, built vocabulary, and connected spoken language to print—all while immersed in a project they genuinely cared about.

These children are going to kindergarten ready in so many more ways than just beautiful printing.

But… wow.

This is what happens when we stop separating play from learning. The learning becomes impossible to miss. 🌿✏️
