School District 52, Prince Rupert, has seen real change in food and meal programming in our schools in the last few years. These changes include school meals programming, the design and completion of a commercial kitchen and food processing room, further growth with school gardens and greenhouses, more support for breakfast programs and local community partnerships that support the work.
In 2022, a District Foods Coordinator Position was created and awarded to Nadia Halward, a Red Seal Chef. Nadia brought passion, innovation, and knowledge to her position. She is community minded and works collaboratively with schools and the community to grow a new approach to food in the school district.
When she took over the school meals programming four years ago, about 300 students were participating and at the end of this past school year, student participation had grown to 511 students.
The big news this September is that the preparation of lunches for schools has moved from Roosevelt Elementary to the new commercial kitchen in the Booth building.
Watch for the Grand Opening of the Commercial Kitchen and the opportunity to tour the new facilities!
