Thank you to our entire school community at Ecole College Heights Elementary for a wonderful heartfelt Remembrance Day Ceremony. Here is a sneak peak at some of the beautiful art projects honoring all those that served in our armed forces so that we can be safe and free.

Thank you to Mrs. MacDermott and her choir for providing the wonderful background music.

More highlights from our Mural Ceremony

10/18/2021

Hadih Ts'uhoonti Whuzadelh - "Hello, we are all happy you have come." This is the new greeting at our entrance that encompasses our new Wall Mural. Carla Joseph, a Metis artist, created this beautiful mural. The vision for the artwork came from Miriam Louie (Indigenous Education Worker), Mr. Brennan (former Principal) and students at ECHE.

The mural has many elements of the Carrier culture in it:

The 4 Carrier Clans - Beaver/Grouse, Bear, Frog and Caribou
The Pit House - Carrier dwelling
Three Women representing Carrier Matriarch
A Drum, representing Carrier music, culture and traditions
Footsteps leading to a scroll and graduation cap representing the learning journey of our students
A spruce bough, used for cleaning and in medicines
Salmon, an important part of Carrier culture and living

In addition, all the images in the tree trunk of the tree were inspired by art pieces created by students last year.

Here are some highlights from our ceremony in September to welcome this mural into our school community. A special thank you to Jennifer Pighan for your blessing on this mural and drumming it to life for all who attended. Thanks to our Trustees, Indigenous Ed PVPs and Carla Joseph for attending along with our staff and students.

Congratulations to our entire school for not only raising cancer awareness but also raising an impressive $784.25 during our Terry Fox Run. One student said it best "I am going to finish the run that Terry Fox couldn't." Safe to say, all our students did an amazing job running their hearts and souls out for many family and friends impacted by cancer.

Thank you to Mrs. Fegan's class and Mrs. Watts class for the inspiring leadership ... these leaders were amazing. Thank you to Mrs. Wallden for spearheading and guiding our leadership program.
