Congratulations to three researchers from UNBC's Faculty of Human and Health Sciences who are among the inaugural recipients of the Michael Smith Health Research BC Engage Awards.

The awards support early-stage collaborations between researchers and research users to address shared health challenges and identify solutions that can improve care.

School of Nursing Professor Dr. Caroline Sanders is partnering with the Quesnel & District Hospice Palliative Care Association to explore community-based supports that promote healthy aging and quality of life for older adults in northern rural B.C.

School of Nursing Assistant Professor Dr. Aderonke Agboji is collaborating with Northern Health on a research project titled “Mapping the Relationships that Shape Surge Response: Exploring how to apply a Network Approach to Implementing Student-Led Evidence on Access and Flow workforce complexity in Northern Health.”

School of Nursing Lecturer Ngoc Huynh is working with community partners to examine wildfire evacuation care gaps from the perspectives of northern rural care providers.

Their projects reflect UNBC's commitment to research that addresses the unique health needs of northern communities while strengthening partnerships across the region.

Congratulations to UNBC Professor Emerita Dr. Martha MacLeod on being appointed a Member of the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest honours!

A visionary leader in rural nursing and remote health care, MacLeod has dedicated her career to improving equitable access to health care in northern and rural communities while mentoring future nurses and nurse practitioners.

As a founding faculty member in UNBC's School of Nursing, the long-serving Chair transformed nursing education across the region through practice-led initiatives, including the creation of the Northern Collaborative Baccalaureate Nursing Program in partnership with the College of New Caledonia and Coast Mountain College, the Rural Nursing Certificate Program and three pathways for Master of Science in Nursing degrees.

Her groundbreaking research in the fields of nursing practice, nursing education, rural health and knowledge mobilization has been recognized provincially, nationally and internationally and continues to have an enduring impact on the future of rural health care in Canada.

Congratulations on this well-deserved national recognition, Dr. MacLeod!

Brandin Lilgert has come full circle - from nursing student to the first nurse practitioner (NP) working in a dedicated role in the emergency department in Northern Health. His role at Bulkley Valley District Hospital is helping shape new approaches to care as NPs - now the fastest growing profession in health care - bring added capacity and collaboration to busy emergency teams.

A nursing degree, earned without leaving home.

When Xiaoli Chen discovered UNBC offered the Northern Baccalaureate Nursing Program in her adopted home of Fort St. John, she knew she could build her career without uprooting her family again.

Earlier this month, Xiaoli walked the stage with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in hand and a job lined up at the Fort St. John Hospital.

“During my first few years in Fort St. John, my family and I were shown so much kindness and support from the community, and now I feel it is my turn to give back through my work as a nurse,” Xiaoli says.

Geographical inequities are leaving many Canadians without timely access to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatment, and the costs go beyond the individual.

In a new article in The Conversation Canada, UNBC Nursing Assistant Professor Dr. Aderonke Agboji and Political Science Associate Professor Dr. Fiona MacDonald outline how undiagnosed and untreated ADHD affects quality of life, and why equitable access to care is essential for building strong local and regional economies.
