Only TWO MORE SLEEPS until our concert Valentine's with the Big Enuff Big Band! Do you have your tickets?

In another instalment in our MEET THE BAND series, we have Laszlo Klein!

Instrument: Trumpet (and sometimes band leader!)

About me:

Laszlo grew up loving two types of music: classical and jazz. Classical because it was so immense, important, and serious. Jazz, particularly Big Band jazz, because it was FUN.

His early music education in jazz began with him being invited to play in the school grade 9 Stage Band on French Horn. Yes. French Horn. Stage Band was the popular name for school big bands in Canada at the time and this was also the time that we competed at music festivals for 1st , 2nd and 3rd place. Laszlo’s grade 9 Stage Band advanced to compete and win first place in the Junior division at the National Stage Band Festival
held in Ottawa. It was a great experience. The only problem was that during the workshop section of the festival, there were no French Horn clinics. In fact, there were no other Horn players at the whole festival. The highlight of the festival was the gala concert which showcased a live performance by the incredible Count Basie Big Band with the Count himself at the piano. Laszlo was hooked!

The rest of Laszlo’s high school band years included competitions in both Stage and Concert bands and Wind Ensembles. The most fun was the Jazz. By the end of high school Laszlo knew he wanted to have a career in music but winning a scholarship to Berkley College for a summer jazz
program in grade 12 made his choice of genre difficult. There were only a handful of jazz Horn players around at the time: two in Rob McConnell; the Boss Brass and a couple in Calgary’s Saturday Pro Band which Laszlo was fortunate enough to have workshops with. He chose the classical route.

Fast forward to today and Laszlo looks back on 35 years as Principal Horn in the professional core of the PGSO, for which he still plays. However, soon after moving to Prince George, he picked up Trumpet for FUN and has since been truly fortunate to play trumpet for Pop, Broadway and Big Band shows. Laszlo particularly enjoys the atmosphere and music of the In The Mood Big Band and its latest evolution, the Big Enuff Big Band.

MEET THE BAND!

Welcome to the first instalment of this series, where we will introduce the various members of the big band.

Up first, Gregory Prosser!

INSTRUMENT:
Trumpet/Flugelhorn 🎺

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WITH THE BAND?:
Member of In the Mood Big Band (Big Enuff Big Band’s previous iteration) from the mid 90’s to it’s last performance on New Year’s Eve 2011 - the night he proposed to the beautiful Esther Prosser (nee Beauchesne).

ABOUT ME:
Gregory is a web-developer by day, and trumpeting musician by night. He has called Prince George his home since 1992 when he first joined the PGSO. He was bitten by the big band/jazz ensemble bug in grade 7 in Toronto, what was the beginning of a life-long love for music in all of its forms.

Inspired by the camaraderie of a large ensemble, all working towards the same goal - the passionate expression and performance of great music.

Stay tuned for the next member introduction!
