The Prince George Chamber of Commerce and UNBC are co-hosting the forum beginning at 7 p.m. in the Canfor Winter Garden. Faculty of Business and Economics Dean Dr. Ronald Camp will moderate the discussion.

Cheering on the Timberwolves!

Elementary students from School District 57 and local independent schools filled the stands at Masich Place Stadium to cheer on the UNBC Timberwolves men's soccer team for a matinee game against the visiting Alberta Golden Bears.

The crowd was treated to an exciting 2-2 draw, plus a science-based half-time show led by Chemistry Professor Dr. Todd Whitcombe and the UNBC Active Minds team.

UNBC has posted its best-ever research environment score in the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings, with the largest single-year increase to date.

Scores rose in four of the five pillars used to rank nearly 2,300 universities worldwide, including in the teaching category where UNBC matched its best-ever score.

"Research and teaching are at the heart of UNBC’s mission to ignite, inspire and lead change. It is wonderful to see that strength recognized in those pillars in the latest Times Higher Education World University rankings," says UNBC Interim President Dr. Bill Owen. "These results show that the North is the future for ideas, discovery and learning."

A warm welcome to UNBC's newest international students!

The International Social was an opportunity to learn more about the resources and supports available at the Prince George campus, foster connections and share a meal.

Staff who have come to UNBC from around the world also shared tips on making the most of life and learning in northern B.C., from getting involved on campus and in Prince George to exploring all the region has to offer.

"Every day, you are contributing to the University community," UNBC Provost and Vice-President Academic Dr. Michel S. Beaulieu told the students gathered in the Bentley Centre. "You are helping to create a diverse community with your perspectives. You belong here. It is our distinct pleasure and honour to have you here."

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day is a day to honour Residential School Survivors, their families and the children who never returned home, while reflecting on the ongoing work of Reconciliation.

Across northern B.C., communities are coming together to mark the day through ceremonies, walks, cultural celebrations, Elder and Survivor stores and opportunities to learn and reflect.

Here are some of the events taking place:

Students, faculty, staff and community members came together in UNBC's Canfor Theatre to watch For Love, a Carrier Sekani Family Services (CSFS) documentary examining the lasting legacy of residential schools and the continued overrepresentation of Indigenous children in Canada's child welfare system.

In providing an introduction to the screening, Takla Nation Hereditary Chief and CSFS Chief Administrative Officer of Child and Family Services Dr. Mary Teegee-Gray shared how the 2016 Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruling on the underfunding of on-reserve child welfare supports served as the impetus for the film she co-wrote and produced with Director Matt Smiley.

For Love highlights the strength and resilience of Indigenous families and communities, and the role of culture in supporting healing and family reunification.

Teegee-Gray was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree at UNBC's Convocation ceremonies this past May in recognition of her decades of advocacy and leadership in advancing culturally grounded child and family services through northern B.C. and across Canada.

After the film, Teegee-Gray answered questions from the audience and shared behind-the-scenes insights into the production process. Monday night's screening marks six years since the documentary premiered at the Vancouver Convention Centre on the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Sept. 30, 2021.

The documentary screening was the culmination of a series of events co-hosted by the UNBC Library and the Office of Equity and Inclusion in advance of this year's observance.

Meet Vanessa Lindstrom, UNBC's Elder and Knowledge Keeper Representative.

Since stepping into the new role within the Office of Indigenous Initiatives (OII), Vanessa has been facilitating and creating opportunities for Elders and Knowledge Keepers to share their knowledge and experiences with students, faculty and staff at the University.

From developing protocols for inviting Elders and Knowledge Keepers to campus events to hosting activities like Elders Bingo, she is helping to foster a welcoming and culturally connected environment at the Prince George campus. Vanessa is also an undergraduate student in the First Nations Studies program!
