What started as a collection of loose parts became an intricate world. Every angle revealed something new: a train route, a rainbow structure, tiny scenarios, buildings, pathways, and details we hadn’t noticed before.

When children are given open-ended materials and the freedom to explore, the results are often more complex, creative, and surprising than we could have imagined. ✨

Children are no different. Growth happens best when we provide the conditions to help them thrive. 🌳

When a sapling struggles, we don’t blame the tree When a young tree struggles, we rarely assume the tree is “bad.” We don’t scold it for drooping, punish it for growing slowly, or compare it to a stronger tree.

Sewing. Which also means: following a sequence, building focus, developing fine motor control, problem-solving when the thread tangles, and finishing something they started from scratch.

Practical, purposeful work is central to learning here at Wilder. The concentration a child develops threading a needle carries directly into reading, writing, and everything else that requires sustained effort.

As you may know, we've recently experienced some vandalism to our outdoor play space. While it's difficult to see damage to a place that means so much to our students and families, we've been deeply encouraged by the kindness and support we've received. 💚

There's a version of school where children sit quietly, move through lessons on a set schedule, and are measured mostly by whether they produce the right answer at the right time.

And then there's what we do at Wilder.

At our small nonprofit school in Port Perry, children learn through doing:building, planting, creating, investigating, and yes, sometimes playing in the mud. That's not a departure from academics. It's actually how strong academic foundations get built.

We offer three programs: Seedlings (ages 2–3), Roots (ages 4–7), and Wings (ages 7–12). Each offer small class sizes, experienced guides, and an environment where children have real time and space to engage with their learning. We draw from Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and Waldorf traditions, but we're not bound by any single model. We use what works.

What we've found is this: children who feel known, curious, and genuinely interested are naturally learning every moment of every day.
