We just celebrated DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) day last week! More often, I find difficult to propose specific startegies that work in the classroom. What can autonomy mean for kids? /// Medical edition When it comes to the care of children, it’s adults making the decisions. This can be most obvious with when it comes to the medical care of children, when bright and gifted doctors look to treat an acute need ( a broken bone, an infection, etc…) or are part of treating chronic conditions. But what happens when children are in situations where the visits to doctors and hospitals are on repeat, and big people talk about them in front of them without including them. We know children are always listening and they hear what is being said, even if they don’t fully understand. The system has amazing child life specialists to help prepare children for procedures but still children don’t often get a chance to talk. Talk about their wishes, their likes and dislikes. So what can a parent do. Here are a few tips: 💫talk to the doctor first to explain your position for topics in front of your child. Consider an email ahead. 💫give space for your child to share. “What’s important for you about today?” Or “what do you like or not like about …”. Children don’t always know they can share till a space is given . 💫children may not have a say on a procedure but they can have a voice on how it makes them feel what might ease their stress. ✨ Providing a voice and sense of autonomy to children isn’t an all or nothing, it’s about a conscious awareness for the fact that children have wishes and desire a space to share them in.
