Another fantastic Intermediate Cruising course wrapped up in the Gulf Islands.

Over six days we had everything you could ask for. Great sailing, sunshine, some lively conditions to keep us thinking, quiet anchorages, beautiful sunsets, and plenty of opportunities to get ashore and explore.

Beyond the miles sailed, we worked on passage planning, pilotage, navigation, tides and currents, anchoring, docking, heavy weather techniques, overnight cruising, and making good decisions as a crew. It’s always rewarding to watch confidence grow as students take on more responsibility with each day.

Thanks to everyone for making it such a fun week. Safe sailing, lots of laughs, and another crew ready for their next adventure.

Orane is currently on the hard, and a dedicated group of volunteers recently came together for an important maintenance session. The team has been busy painting the bottom of the boat and carrying out essential repairs below the waterline.

During this process, we also completed a thorough assessment and identified an few areas of concern. These findings will help guide planning for the next haul-out, where more significant upgrades and repairs are anticipated to ensure the vessel’s long-term reliability.

A great deal of time and care goes into maintaining Orane, all with the goal of keeping her safe, comfortable, and ready for many more seasons on the water. Thank you to everyone who contributed their time and expertise to this effort.

Getting into sailing can feel overwhelming at first; but it doesn’t have to be. There are lots of simple ways to get started:

• Watch YouTube videos to learn the basics
• Spend time at a marina or dock; talk to people and ask questions
• Ask around to see if anyone needs crew (many skippers are happy to have extra hands)
• Join a local sailing club; many start at $150/year and let you sail often with experienced people
• Take a course if you want a structured introduction
• Read books to build your knowledge

If you're thinking about charting (renting) or using a clubs boat for multi-day trips or anchoring out, you’ll typically need certification or your own boat.

There’s no single path into sailing. Some people choose to buy a boat and learn that way, but it’s important to be realistic because costs like moorage, insurance, and maintenance can add up quickly.

For many, the most affordable and flexible path is joining a club and building certifications over time, as your schedule and budget allow.

I’m sharing this because I remember how confusing it was at the start. Now, having gone through it, I can say it’s absolutely worth it. If you enjoy the outdoors and being on the water, sailing might be a great fit for you too.
