STEM is in full swing at the Bruce County International Plowing Match and Rural Expo 2026 in Walkerton!

NII Explore joined the excitement in the Bruce Power tent (on Electric Avenue!), bringing hands-on STEM activities to thousands of students throughout the event.

Alongside the activities, hundreds of visitors stopped by to learn more about nuclear energy and the role it plays in Ontario’s energy mix.

This spring, gymnasiums across Bruce and Grey counties became hands-on learning labs.

Through our ExploreZone Roadshows, the NII Explore team visited schools throughout the region—including Dundalk, Sauble Beach, Nawash and Lucknow—bringing STEM activities directly to students from Kindergarten to Grade 8.

Over the course of 16 school visits, nearly 4,500 students explored concepts like coding, electric circuits, potential and kinetic energy, centre of gravity, and the engineering design process through interactive challenges. From building towering structures and marble runs to wiring circuits and creating custom cardboard designs, students learned by doing.

Every school visit is an opportunity to spark curiosity—and show students that science and engineering are meant to be explored firsthand.

Engineering starts with curiosity—and sometimes a piece of cardboard.

This past weekend, NII welcomed the 2nd Port Elgin Embers to our headquarters for a hands-on engineering and design workshop with our NII Explore team.

Twenty Girl Guides, ages 7–8, put the engineering design process into action—designing, building, testing and improving their own creations. Using our ChompSaws, they brought everything from personalized nameplates and 3D dioramas to imaginative cardboard castles to life.

Programs like this help young learners build confidence, think creatively and develop problem-solving skills through hands-on exploration.

Thank you to the 2nd Port Elgin Embers and their leaders for spending the day with us. We loved seeing so many creative ideas come to life!

NII was pleased to join the Saugeen Shores Men's Shed this week to share more about our work and impact across the region.

Organizations like Men's Shed play an important role in building strong, connected communities by creating opportunities for members to learn new skills, build friendships, give back and combat social isolation.

Especially during Men's Mental Health Month, it's a reminder of how valuable spaces like this can be.

This week, Erin Beaubien had the opportunity to speak with the group about NII's work and some of the highlights and achievements from 2025.

The Canadian Leadership Conference / Conférence canadienne sur le leadership brings together emerging leaders from across business, labour, government, education and the cultural sector to broaden perspectives on leadership, work and community-building across Canada.

As part of their visit to the region, delegates toured local businesses and supply chain organizations, including Bruce Power and the NII Advance Technology Campus.

NII staff were pleased to welcome delegates from across the country, with Jessica Linthorne delivering a presentation on NII’s work in the region and across Canada—highlighting initiatives in clean energy innovation, workforce development and community collaboration.

Thanks to the Town of Saugeen Shores Councillor Dave Myette for helping make this cultural exchange possible and for delivering a thoughtful presentation of the Saugeen Sparks Training Centre.

From robotics and engineering challenges to peer mentorship and career exploration, the 2026 Skills Expo showcased the power of experiential learning and collaboration between education and industry.

We were pleased to welcome students and educators from the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board to the NII Advance Technology Campus and support opportunities that help connect youth to the future of clean energy, skilled trades and innovation.

The energy was electric at the Nuclear Innovation Institute Advance Technology Campus as BGCDSB hosted its highly anticipated 2026 Skills Expo on May 20th, 2026.
