MusicShare is a program unique to our branch. We encourage students to put together their own recital for friends and family, and collect donations for their efforts. These funds are then used to support music education in our community.

Here is a group of enthusiastic bands students participating in District 42 Grand Band Jamboree recently, supported in part by funds from MusicShare.

🎼 Leonard Bernstein Meets Beethoven — with Maximilian Schell

In 1982, Leonard Bernstein and actor Maximilian Schell joined forces for Bernstein/Beethoven, an 11-part television series filmed in Vienna. Across its episodes, Bernstein conducted the Vienna Philharmonic in all nine symphonies while Schell narrated, reading from Beethoven’s letters and reflections.

Bernstein explored Beethoven’s lifelong “struggle for inevitability” — the idea that his music sounds effortless only after years of painstaking revision. He famously remarked that Beethoven wasn’t a natural melodist like Mozart, but a master craftsman who could turn the smallest musical “seed” into a symphonic revelation.

Together, Bernstein and Schell delved into the spiritual heart of Beethoven’s art — how works like the Ninth Symphony and its “Ode to Joy” transcend grief, faith, and politics to speak a universal language of hope and humanity.

The series, broadcast on PBS and A&E and later released by Deutsche Grammophon, remains one of the most profound televised meditations on music, art, and the soul of genius.
