Over 110 Years of Community Heart: The Story of Central School
Today is a milestone day at Central Community Elementary. As we gather with our Mayor, school board trustees, artists, and families to unveil our official new school logo, we aren't just looking forward—we are standing on the shoulders of the pioneers who built the very foundation of public education in British Columbia.
🏛️ From a One-Room Schoolhouse to a Civic Anchor
Before our current building existed, local children gathered in the one-room Junction School, which opened in 1900. But as Port Coquitlam boomed toward its official incorporation as a city in 1913, the community demanded a modern, world-class space for its families.
The building you see today was completed in late 1913, with the year proudly etched above our main entryway. On January 20, 1914, Central School officially opened its doors in a massive civic ceremony. The provincial Minister of Finance traveled from Victoria, joining our first mayor to declare this school an open sanctuary of learning for the entire region. Central stands today as the oldest continuously operating school site in School District 43 [3.1].
📜 A Legacy of Passion, Resilience, and Royal Spirit
Central’s early history was shaped by our founding principal, Ada Irvine, a legendary pioneer educator who led our school for 30 years [3.1]. She didn't just teach curriculum; she protected our community. During the hardships of the Great Depression, she quietly used her own resources to run clothing drives and ensure no child sat in a Central classroom hungry [3.2].
Our school has always been fueled by fierce community pride. In 1939, when the Royal Train carrying King George VI was scheduled to bypass Port Coquitlam, our school community refused to let the children miss out. Teachers and parents booked a special commuter train, and our students wrapped the entire train in festive crepe paper, traveling down the tracks to New Westminster just to catch a glimpse of history [3.2]. For decades, Central was also the beating heart of the city’s annual May Day Festivals, organizing grand marches from our hallways to the historic Agricultural Grounds [3.3].
💖 Shaping the Heart of British Columbia
Central’s history isn’t just etched in bricks or old photographs; it lives on in the culture of kindness we export to the rest of Canada. In 2005, right here in our classrooms, a school counselor and a passionate group of Central students looked around and decided the world needed more empathy [3.5]. They launched Real Acts of Caring (RAC) [3.5].
What started as a small, grassroots effort by Central kids exploded across the Tri-Cities. Today, that very movement is officially proclaimed by the British Columbia government as a province-wide annual week of kindness [3.5].
