I had some thoughts this morning as I plot out some art I need to get done. Two old farmhouses that are no longer are still on the drawing board…and they are stirring some feelings right now.
This little farm cottage we live in we own. But also we have become her stewards. Just a family in a long line of families she has sheltered over the years.
A couple of weeks ago, someone who had fond memories of growing up in the area popped by to say hello.
Great to see this old girl being cared for she said. I grew up just in town and came over to play with the kids here.❤️
This old home is well on her way to becoming over 150 years old. She has seen a lot. She was built on a shoestring stone by stone, wood piece by wood piece…to shelter growing families. The one family that were actually tenants remember her the most fondly. They rented here for a long time…long enough that the home was referred to by their family name. Lol
The kids grew up in this home. One drives by and said omg I love seeing it still here!!
We pass by many an old home fallen into neglect and disrepair. The developers salivate over tearing it down to build a development, or at the very least a more ‘modern’ house. But the materials, the heart, and the imprint of the many families that grew up there cannot be easily replaced.
Many farm families have to make a difficult choice. The homes they grew up in and remember … what to do with it? The remember like it was yesterday…that tree swing…the snowmen in the yard…bringing home their babies from the hospital etc …
Well, they move on, grandparents pass away or end up in senior living…the empty house sits waiting. So they hope for a new family to at least care for and steward the home….becoming part of its legacy.
Our little farm cottage on its little patch of farmstead isn’t much to behold. But she is what people could afford at the time. Built by hand, in its walls they raised their families…and we feel honoured to carry on the tradition of being her caretakers. Always something to fix up or renovate. We do as we can afford. In the meantime we count our blessings to be here on this land.🥰
