Due to overwhelming interest in the Heavy Rigging Class we have decided to postpone the "Surviving Your Mayday" Operations and Command classes and have added additional seating for the Rigging Class. We are rescheduling these courses for next spring and will announce the dates soon. Thank-you to all those that registered for the Mayday programs and for your understanding in postponing them.

We apologize for the wait but we had to make a few changes due to unforeseen circumstances. Jarrod Sergi had to pull out due to a transfer to a new Division but he asked Battalion Chief Brandon Dommel to come in his place. We are very excited to have BC Dommel come and teach the Survivng Your Mayday - Command track. Also Aaron Fields has asked to postpone the Nozzle Forward class until 2026 due to a scheduling conflict with his new position. Once new dates are set we will announce them. We wish both Jarrod and Aaron all the best in their new positions.

Surviving Your Mayday

You may not be the Firefighter to call the Mayday but every Firefighter on scene Must Own the Mayday…..it’s Your Mayday.

Every Mayday is Your Mayday.
You Call a Mayday it’s Your Mayday.
A Firefighter from Your crew calls a Mayday it’s Your Mayday.
A Firefighter from Your Department calls a Mayday it’s Your Mayday.
Any Firefighter on Your scene calls a Mayday it’s Your Mayday.

When one of Your Brothers or Sisters calls a Mayday you have a role to play in resolving the Mayday. What makes Your Mayday survivable?

The outcome of Your Mayday is determined long before the Mayday is called. Are you ready for Your Mayday?

This 3 Day Hands-On-Training program has two separate tracks. All students from the Operations track MUST bring bunker gear, SCBA and at least 1 spare cylinder. Students will register for only one track:

Track 1 - Mayday Operations
Track 2 - Mayday Command

Track 1 Mayday Operations

This program includes a lecture that will cover the history and evolution of Mayday and RIT Operations, the Realities of Mayday and RIT Operations, Proactive vs Reactive RIT, the Physical, Psychological and Physiological demands of Mayday and RIT Operations, and the need for every Firefighter to be RIT trained.

The remainder of the program will be focused on Firefighter Survival and Rapid Intervention Team skills, drills and scenarios. The skills that will be cover include:

Calling the Mayday, SCBA Emergencies, Window Hangs and Drops, Ladder Bailouts, Wall Breaches, Entanglement, Lost and/or Disorientated, Rapid Intervention Teams Positions/Responsibilities, Searching for a Down Firefighter, Assessing and Packaging a Down Firefighter, RIT Packs, Drags and Carries, Moving a Down Firefighter Up and Down Stairs, Removing a Firefighter through a Hole in The Floor, Above and Below Grade Window Removal, and Down Firefighter CPR

Track 2 Commanding Mayday Operations

This program will see the Command Officers complete the lecture from the Operations track and then spen the rest of the first two days with Battalion Chief Brandon Dommel in the classroom.

Being able to manage a mayday first starts with a core foundation of good command control. This class will begin by reinforcing important principles at the command level. Communication, size up, strategy/tactics, and the ability to deploy resources efficiently. Then, we will move into adding the Mayday problem. We will discuss common pitfalls during mayday situations, the human factor that exists when a mayday is called, and how to manage that situation whether you have multiple resources or you are resource limited. The goal of this class is to give the incident commander confidence in managing a mayday situation if they ever come across one.

On Day 3 the Officers will take turns being the IC and RIT Officer in scenarios with the Firefighters from the Operations Track. Battalion Chief Brandon Dommel will be in the Command Post with the IC to Mentor the student through Commanding the Mayday.

Instructor Bios:

Chris Boulay is a 2nd generation firefighter with over 28 years of experience. Chris is a Lieutenant with the Moncton Fire Department and is assigned to Rescue 4. Chris is also a Co-Owner and Lead Instructor for Advanced Rescue Training. He is a life long student of the fire service and is very passionate about sharing his experience and learning from other firefighters. He has taught Hands-On courses and lectures for departments and conferences across Canada. Chris is the driving force behind the “Mentorship Through Brotherhood” Leadership and Tactics Conference which is now in its third year.

Brandon Dommel is Battalion Chief with Norfolk Fire Rescue (VA) where he has spent the last 30 years. He is currently assigned to the city's 3rd Battalion. Prior to working for the city of Norfolk Brandon was a volunteer firefighter in Pennsylvania and Matyland. He has developed and led multiple training programs for the city of Norfolk to include Engine and Ladder Company Operations, Incident Command and Firefighter Safety and Survival. Brandon is an adjunt instructor with the Virginia Department of Fire Programs where he focuses on officer development, strategy/tactics, and Mayday/RIT operations. He currently serves as a board member for the development of Mayday/RIT curriculm and training programs for the State of Virginia.

Course Structure:

Module 1: Classroom Theory

Health and safety standards, Preventative maintenance, Safe operation procedures.

Load Assessments, Center of gravity, Rigging loads.

Equipment explanation including its function, safety features, and proper handling techniques. This reduces the risk of accidents and enhances their confidence during hands-on application.

Module 2: Heavy Rigging

Fundamentals of rigging equipment, including chains, hooks, shackles, and angles.

Emphasis on safety, proper use, and maintenance of rigging tools.

Detailed instruction on equipment limitations to ensure safe operations.

Module 3: Equipment Training

Vehicle Stabilization: Techniques for stabilizing vehicles overturned on their roof or side
using Rescue Struts.

Heavy Vehicle Lifting & Stabilization: Practical applications of Rescue Struts and Hydraulic Struts based on organizational equipment.

Building Shoring: Instruction on Rakers, Flying Rakers, and Woodless Raker Systems.

Air Bag Heavy Lifting: Use of wood cribbing and Rescue Struts for heavy lifting scenarios.

Module 4: Advanced Rigging and Final Exercise

Advanced techniques for winches, hoists, sn**ch blocks, and anchor systems.

Monopod and Bipod rigging applications for complex scenarios.

Final Exercise: A realistic heavy-object moving simulation that integrates all learned
skills.

Mike Tesarski is a Captain assigned to a Special Operations Team in one of the largest cities in Canada. Mike brings 25 years of operational rescue and command experience through his heavy involvement in technical rope, confined space, vehicle and trench rescue teams.

Has been a clinically active Critical Care Flight Paramedic part-time for over two decades on the helicopters based in Toronto. Being a flight medic has exposed him to many complex and prolonged rescue incidents including heavy vehicle, trench, collapse, and machine entrapment. Being involved in these incidents has taught him the importance of tact, discretion, and diplomacy while dealing with allied agencies in a super high stress environment. Mike is also a contributor and auditor for Jones and Bartletts Trench Rescue textbook 4th edition.

His passion for learning Auto Extrication has had him compete at a world level on his city’s extrication team. These competitions have taught him skills for Rescue but more so about being a member of a high functioning group and sharing and learning from others around the globe. While being a member and a coach he has won multiple individual and team awards including two world championships.

Recently Mike finished his Advanced Rigging testing and Qualified as a "Master Rigger"

As a fire service instructor Mike has taught for many agencies and colleges in North America and truly believes in ongoing education is vital to being a competent rescue worker.

Tactics Day (Saturday September 27):

Tactical Reasoning, Making Good Decisions in Bad Situation:

The emergency scene is an unforgiving environment in which critical decisions must be made. Most people are not naturally inclined to make good decisions in the high threat
environment. Ther fire service does a good job teaching people how to complete tasks but does little to teach people how to make good decisions. This class draws on the principles
of scientific research and practical steps a fire department can take to position their members for success. The material is ideally suited for all members and all ranks.

Tactical Operations in the First 10 Minutes:

This program covers these actions needed in the first 10 minutes of a structure fire response. Pre – response considerations, size up, tactical decision making, and standard company functions will be covered during this period of instruction.

Fireground Decision Making: A Combination of Science & Art:

No one can naturally assume command at a dynamic incident and be successful at the endeavor. Leading forces at an emergency is an acquired skill. Unfortunately, many organizations do not understand the varied elements that make up a truly effective
incident commander. This course is designed to produce effective Incident Commanders who understand how they are making decisions, not just filling out tactical worksheets or
repeating what they have heard others say on the radio.
This course can include scenarios and fireground simulations built around buildings from your jurisdiction, using your operating guidelines, and your resource capabilities. This
customized approach will require additional lead time and interaction to ensure the deliverables meet your expectations.

Leadership Day (Sunday September 28):

Responsibilities of Command:

Regardless of the size of the unit the act of command requires a unique blend of traits and characteristics. Responsibilities of Command takes a holistic approach to develop those
traits necessary to lead firefighters at the station and on the fire ground. This class combines the hard learned lessons from the US military and decades of fire service experience into a practical guide for those tasked with the challenging job of leading
personnel and meeting the mission requirements of the organization.

A Fire Officer’s Guide to Dealing with Discipline:

Dealing with people and performance issues can be a mine field that a fire officer must navigate. A wrong decision or action can ripple well past the confines of an individual firehouse. For most officers handling disciplinary issues are extremely uncomfortable and probably one of the things they have not been properly prepared to manage. Regardless of the policies for a specific agency there are basic steps to handling discipline that
always apply. This presentation will supply the fundamental understanding and skills a supervisor must have to effectively and fairly deal with issues that are of a disciplinary nature.

Tactical Excellence, It Doesn’t Just Happen :

Excellence is the standard our public expects from their fire department and the standard they rightfully deserve. Unfortunately, some fire departments do not understand the complexities of building teams that can operate at this level. This program will provide specific actions steps that can help officers and chiefs build operational units that can function at a high level in dynamic high-risk situations.

Dennis Reilly is a fifty-year fire service veteran and is a retired Fire Chief and is the Owner of The First Line Fire Service Training Company LLC. Dennis has served as the Fire Chief in Pittsburg, Kansas and Sunrise Beach, Missouri, an Assistant in North Carolina & California and retired as a Battalion Chief in
Cherry Hill, New Jersey. During his time in New Jersey, Dennis became one of the original members of the New Jersey Urban Search & Rescue Task Force 1. As part of Task Force 1 the Chief made several deployments including to New York City as part of the response to the Terrorist Attacks of 9/11.

Chief Reilly holds a Master Degree in Public Administration from Penn State University and is a CFO. An accomplished author and lecturer, Chief Reilly is active in numerous professional development activities within the fire service and has spoken at various events to include the Command Officers Boot
Camp, the Orlando Fire Conference, the Atlanta Metro Fire Conference, the Louisiana Instructors & Firefighter Training (L.I.F.T.) conference and the Culture & Craft Seminar.

Outside of his fire service career, Dennis is a US Army veteran having served in Iraq during the Operation Desert Storm. From 2007 – 2010 the Chief worked as an independent contractor providing protective services to several different government clients in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Chief Reilly has been married to his wife Ann for 39 years. They have two adult children, and three
grandchildren.
