So you want to know if your child is interested in learning to play the piano?
There are many ways to discover this:
1. Expressed Interest: Listen to your child. Do they express curiosity or interest in music and playing the piano? Do they enjoy listening to piano music or watching piano performances?
2. Initiative: Observe if your child takes the initiative to explore the piano on their own, even if they don't know how to play yet. Are they naturally drawn to the instrument?
3. Curiosity: Are they curious about how the piano works? Do they ask questions about it or show an interest in learning more about music in general?
4. Musical Activities: Pay attention to whether they participate in other musical activities, like singing along to songs, clapping to rhythms, or showing interest in other musical instruments.
5. Encouragement: Sometimes, a child might be interested but hesitant. Encourage them to try it out and see if they enjoy it.
6. Support and Exposure: Create an environment where they have access to a piano or keyboard. This makes it easier for them to explore their interest.
7. Trial Lessons: You could offer a few trial piano lessons to see if they enjoy the learning process. Their reaction during and after these lessons can provide valuable insights.
8. Patience: Keep in mind that children's interests can change over time. If they don't show immediate interest, don't force it. Give them time to explore various activities.
Remember that genuine interest often comes from within, so it's important to foster a supportive and encouraging atmosphere while allowing the child to explore their interests at their own pace.

What is the importance of theory work when it comes to learning the piano?
Theory work is crucial when teaching beginner children to play the piano for several reasons:
1. Foundation for Understanding. Theory provides the fundamental knowledge about music, such as reading notes, rhythms, and understanding musical symbols. This knowledge forms the basis for playing any piece of music.
2. Musical Literacy. It helps children become musically literate, enabling them to read and interpret sheet music. This skill is essential for progressing to more complex pieces and for communicating with other musicians.
3. Ear Training. Theory work often includes ear training exercises, which help children develop their listening skills. This is valuable for playing by ear, improvisation, and overall musicality.
4. Rhythm and Timing. Understanding theory aids in mastering rhythm and timing, which are critical for playing piano accurately. It helps children develop a sense of musical timing and precision.
5. Music Appreciation. Learning theory allows children to appreciate and understand the structure and nuances of the music they're playing. This can enhance their enjoyment of playing and listening to music.
6. Creativity. While it may seem technical, theory can also foster creativity. It provides a framework within which students can experiment, compose, and arrange music.
7. Preparation for Advanced Studies. For those who wish to pursue piano studies at an advanced level, a solid foundation in theory is essential. It's often a prerequisite for more formal music education.
8. Problem-Solving Skills. Learning theory involves solving musical puzzles and challenges, which can enhance a child's problem-solving abilities and critical thinking skills.
9. Confidence and Independence. Understanding theory empowers children to learn independently. It equips them with the tools to explore music on their own and tackle new pieces with confidence.
Theory work is the educational scaffolding that supports a child's piano journey. It not only teaches them how to play but also helps them become well-rounded musicians with a deep understanding and appreciation of music.

Did you know that some of the keys on a piano are made from elephant tusks? Well, not anymore! A long time ago, piano keys used to be made from ivory, which comes from the tusks of elephants. But because it's important to protect elephants from harm, pianos now use special materials like plastic or wood for the keys. So, when you play the piano today, you're not only making beautiful music but also helping to protect our planet's amazing animals! 🐘🎹

So, your child doesn't want to practice the piano?
Encouraging children to practice the piano can be a rewarding but sometimes challenging task. Here are some tips to help motivate and inspire your piano student to practice:
Make It Fun: Learning music should be enjoyable. Incorporate games, fun songs, or creative exercises into their practice routine. This can make practice feel less like a chore and more like a playful activity.
Set Realistic Goals: Break down their learning into achievable goals. Celebrate their successes along the way. This provides a sense of accomplishment and motivation to keep going.
Establish a Routine: Consistency is key. Encourage your student to practice at the same time each day, so it becomes a habit. A regular schedule helps them understand that practice is an essential part of their day.
Shorter, Frequent Sessions: Younger children often have shorter attention spans. Encourage shorter, more focused practice sessions (15-20 minutes) several times a day, rather than one long session.
Use a Practice Journal: Have your student keep a practice journal where they can track their progress, write down challenges, and set goals. This can help them see their improvement over time.
Praise and Positive Reinforcement: Offer praise and positive feedback for their efforts, even if they make mistakes. Positive reinforcement can boost their confidence and motivation.
Incorporate Their Interests: If your student has a favourite song or a specific musical interest, try to incorporate it into their lessons. This makes learning more engaging for them.
Variety in Repertoire: Keep their practice interesting by introducing a variety of music styles and genres. This can help prevent boredom and keep them engaged.
Involve Parents: Encourage parents to be actively involved in their child's practice routine. They can help set up a practice schedule, offer encouragement, and even sit in on lessons to better understand their child's progress.
Perform for Others: Encourage your student to perform for family and friends. This can give them a sense of achievement and motivate them to practice more.
Be Patient: Understand that progress may be slow, and there will be ups and downs. Encourage your student to embrace mistakes as part of the learning process.
Showcase Achievements: Consider organizing recitals or small concerts for your students to showcase their progress. The prospect of performing in front of others can be a great motivator.
Find a Good Teacher-Student Fit: Sometimes, a student may not be connecting with their current teacher. Exploring different teaching styles or teachers might help reignite their passion for piano.
Lead by Example: If you're a passionate and enthusiastic teacher, your students are more likely to mirror your attitude towards learning and practicing.
Remember that each child is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Building a positive and supportive learning environment is crucial for fostering a love of piano playing.

Is your child ready for piano lessons?
Here are some tips to help you determine if your little one is ready to embark on their musical journey.
1. Interest and enthusiasm: Pay attention to your child’s interest in music. Do they enjoy listening to music, sing along, or show an interest in playing the piano? A genuine curiosity and enthusiasm are excellent indicators.
2. Basic reading skills: While your child doesn’t need to read music before starting, having some basic reading skills can be helpful. If they can recognize letters and numbers, it’s a good sign.
3. Fine motor skills: Piano playing requires coordination between fingers, so basic fine motor skills are essential. If your child can hold a pencil or crayon comfortably, they are on the right track.
4. Attention span: Piano lessons involve focused attention for short periods. If your child can sit still and concentrate for even a few minutes, it’s a positive sign.
5. Responsibility: Learning the piano requires a level of commitment. If your child can handle simple responsibilities like completing chores or homework, they may be ready for the commitment of regular practice.
6. Encouragement, not pressure: Ensure that your child is motivated by positive encouragement, rather than feeling pressured. They should be excited about learning the piano, not feeling forced into it.
7. Supportive environment: Creating a supportive environment at home is crucial. Make sure you have a piano or keyboard, as well as a comfortable place to practice.
8. Age consideration: While there’s no fixed age to start piano lessons, most children begin between the ages of 5 and 8. However, individual readiness varies, so trust your instincts as a parent.
9. Consult a teacher: Consider scheduling a consultation with a piano teacher. They can assess your child’s readiness and provide personalized guidance.
Remember, every child is unique, and there’s no rush to start piano lessons. It’s essential to foster a love for music and learning. If your child exhibits these signs of readiness, it might be the perfect time to embark on this beautiful musical journey together.

My name is Courtney and I have been playing the piano since I was 8 years old. It’s always been my most beloved hobby and passion. Nothing beats being able to sit down at a piano and make music!
I have been teaching piano for about 12 years, however I took a small hiatus when I had my kids. Now I’m back and ready to start teaching again.
I teach at my home in Pickering, Ontario, on my Yamaha upright piano. While I teach all ages, I love teaching children and getting them started on their path to loving music and loving the piano.
I have space available this fall for new students between the ages of 5 and 16. I currently have availability on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (after school/early evening).
Sessions are 30 minutes, once a week at my home in Pickering.
