April 8th is the International Day of Pink.
The International Day of Pink is observed annually during the second week of April. It began in Nova Scotia in 2007, when two Grade 12 students, David Shepherd and Travis Price, witnessed homophobic bullying and harassment against a Grade 9 student, all because he was wearing the colour pink. In a show of solidarity, they encouraged their fellow students to wear pink to school the following day. The day has since grown into an international event that encourages millions to wear pink and stand up against bullying, discrimination, and hate.
This year, the International Day of Pink falls on April 8. The theme of this year’s event is “Echo” which calls us to tune in to the voices of q***r and trans communities, past and present. This call to action is particularly relevant in today’s political climate.
In Alberta, in addition to the laws attacking the rights of transgender and gender-diverse youth and athletes, the government has ordered schools to remove at least 160 titles from school and classroom libraries. Many of the titles removed explore 2SLGBTQIA+ experiences and were written to give youth information on 2SLGBTQIA+ people and culture in age-appropriate ways. It’s not a coincidence that anti-2SLGBTQIA+ organizations were the ones that lobbied for the book ban.
Education and critical thinking are crucial elements for democracy to thrive. Conversely, book bans aim to suppress knowledge and erode empathy and understanding of diverse perspectives and identities. Banning books and preventing the spread of information has been a core tenant of fascist governments throughout history.

International Transgender Day of Visibility is an annual awareness day celebrated around the world on March 31st. The day is dedicated to acknowledging the discrimination and violence experienced by people who are transgender. It also celebrates the accomplishments of transgender and gender nonconforming people while raising awareness of the work that still needs to be done to achieve transgender justice.
The day was founded by US transgender activist Rachel Crandall of Michigan in 2009 as a reaction to the lack of recognition of transgender people, and citing the frustration that the only well-known transgender-centred day was the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which mourns the murders of transgender people, but does not acknowledge and celebrate living members of the transgender community.

Day of Pink 2026 invites you to explore ECHO—a theme that calls us to tune in to the voices of q***r and trans communities, past and present. These are the voices that dared to speak up, to love out loud, to resist, and to reshape the law. Their courage continues to echo through every right we hold, every story we tell, and every change still to come.
WHEN: April 1st 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM
WHERE: Peterborough Public Library, 345 Aylmer St N, Peterborough (Friends of the Library Community Room)
🎟️ FREE: For your free ticket go to dayofpink.org/echo
What happens when we refuse to be silenced? The ECHO Tour stops at the library to share stories from history and lived experience that shape who we are and where we go next.
This year, the Day of Pink ECHO Tour travels across Canada, bringing together powerful storytellers, poets, activists, and community leaders to share the 2SLGBTQIA+ stories that once faced censorship—and still fight for space today.
From courtrooms to bookstores, family tables to federal law, q***r and trans voices have always resisted silence. This tour honours that resistance, marking 25 years since two defining moments in Canadian q***r history:
- The Supreme Court case Little Sisters Bookstore v. Canada
- Passing of the Modernization of Benefits and Obligations Act
But this is not just about the past—it’s about the stories still echoing now. Stories that shape who we are and where we go next.
🎙️ What to Expect
The ECHO Tour is an evening of poetry, conversation, reflection, and truth-telling.
Our speakers will share stories from history and lived experience—stories that would have been censored 25 years ago, and in many places, still are.
This is not just a show. It’s a call to listen.
At this event you will you will hear from AJ Dolman, Ryan Thomas Wood, Patti Gray, and local author/book seller Tammy Insley!
