Grades 4-6 | Literature & Writing

As we have been working through The Last Battle by C. S. Lewis, we have learned that there are many kings, queens, heroes, and legendary creatures of old whose stories are not shared with the reader. As such, the students have begun creating their own “untold tales of Narnia”. Their target audience will be the Grade K-3 students, whom the older students will present their stories to upon completion. Our young writers will draft their stories in outline form and develop them into full story format, along with illustrations. This activity has provided a great opportunity for us to review the components that make up an effective, interesting narrative: characters (including a protagonist and an antagonist), main idea, plot (beginning, middle, and end), conflict, and resolution.

In all of our writing assignments this term, the students have been using the acronyms POWER and TIDE to help them move more effectively through the stages of the writing process.

The P stands for Plan, where the student pulls apart the writing prompt, determining exactly what the assignment requires and picking their ideas. Graphic organizers are particularly helpful in this phase, and the children worked in pairs to brainstorm and record ideas for their Narnia narratives.

The O stands for Organize, the stage where the notes made in the planning phase are put into order. The children are encouraged to use paragraphs that follow the TIDE structure: Topic sentence, Information, Detailed elaboration, Ending.

The W stands for Write, where the actual essay or story is produced through careful reference to the plan/organized thoughts from the first two phases.

The E stands for Edit, where students check their work for punctuation and spelling errors, and add in stronger words, synonyms, and more descriptive details. Finally, the R stands for Revise, where the students reproduce a polished final product.

In God’s kindness, a generous donor has offered to match all year-end donations to Kawartha Classical Christian School. That means that you can double the impact of your donation! Every gift counts, no matter how small!

There is no way to faithfully live the Christian life and avoid cost. Loving and serving others necessarily comes with sacrifices, and we must meet these with faithful rigour rather than retreat.

As it concerns Christian education, the way forward is to keep planting seeds in faith, “that the next generation might…set their hope in God and not forget the works of God…” (Ps. 6-7).

Thank you for partnering with us in our efforts to tune hearts and train minds, to the glory of Christ.
