We believe that each moment we share with children offers us an opportunity to build positive relationships and create an atmosphere that nurtures children,

Compass is expanding child care spaces across the regions we work in and this will allow us to continue to help meet the needs.

Happy International Day of Play! ✨

Play is the language of learning—where children explore, wonder, create, and make meaning of the world around them. Today, we celebrate the joy, curiosity, and endless possibilities that emerge when children are given time, space, and trust to play.

Last week, members of Compass ELC met with MPP Dave Piccini to discuss child care and workforce challenges. MPP Piccini was interested in the impact of the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) plan in Northumberland County and confirmed the Province’s commitment to renewing the agreement with the federal government, pending resolution of a few outstanding issues.

Compass ELC’s CEO Sheila Olan-MacLean emphasized the importance of regulated child care in ensuring safe, high-quality services, and advocated for continued prioritization of non-profit providers. It was noted that if public funding is extended to for-profit operators, any publicly funded property purchases or renovations should remain public assets if the business closes.

MPP Piccini welcomed the addition of 26 new Kindergarten Before and After School spaces under the CWELCC model, which will reduce costs for families and address local demand in Campbellford. These spaces resulted from advocacy by a family member, Cassandra Hartley (pictured on the left), who was concerned her child would not be able to secure one of the limited Before & After School child care spaces.

The meeting concluded with a discussion on reducing barriers for educators trained in other provinces or countries, with the goal of increasing the number of Registered Early Childhood Educators in Ontario.

"Children are active constructors of knowledge. They are not empty vessels waiting to be filled; they are already full of curiosity and ideas"

How can this shift in worldview change our systems of care? How different would the world be if we valued every child in this way?
