There was a special kind of excitement in the Grade 1–2 classroom as the children gathered for their much-anticipated Cat Party—a celebration of their completed knitted cats from handwork class.

Over many weeks, small hands learned to cast on, knit stitch by knit stitch, and patiently bring their soft creations to life. There were moments of concentration, perseverance, and pride as each cat slowly took shape—each one as unique as the child who made it.

At the party, the classroom was filled with smiles and a sense of shared accomplishment. The children celebrated not just the finished cats, but the care and effort woven into every stitch.

These moments are more than a celebration of craft—they are a celebration of patience, focus, and the quiet confidence that grows when children create something meaningful with their own hands. 🐱🐾

In a Rowan Tree classroom, movement is woven throughout the day. Whether children are climbing, carrying, balancing, stretching, exploring outdoors, or learning through hands-on activities, movement helps them feel regulated, focused, and ready to learn.

Research continues to show that movement supports healthy brain development, attention, emotional well-being, and self-regulation. That’s why we embrace active learning, outdoor play, and flexible classroom environments that honour children’s natural need to move.

At Rowan Tree, movement isn’t a break from learning- it’s an essential part of it.

At Rowan Tree, caring for the classroom is part of caring for the community.

Each day, children help sweep, tidy, sort, fold, and tend to classroom pets and plants - learning practical life skills while developing responsibility, confidence, and a sense of belonging. These meaningful tasks are modeled by their teachers and woven naturally into the rhythm of the day.

Our warm, home-like classrooms, filled with natural materials and thoughtfully organized spaces, offer a calm environment where children can focus, regulate, and thrive. Through caring for the spaces they share, children discover that even the smallest acts of contribution matter. 🌿

A shout-out to the !

We are so grateful for our ongoing partnership with which brings the joy of literature right to our doorstep each week.

Thoughtfully selected books are selected by the librarians - helping us keep our shelves fresh, engaging and responsive to our curriculum and the interests of our students. These shared books open windows into new worlds and spark a lifelong love of reading.

In the fall and spring, this partnership becomes an especially meaningful part of our Reading Buddies program. During these seasons, community volunteers, teachers, and older students are paired with our emergent readers to share stories, build confidence, and nurture literacy in a warm, supportive environment.

We are so thankful for this collaboration and for the way it helps weave community, connection, and a love of reading into our school.

After a busy morning of climbing, creating, exploring, and eating lunch around our community table, the rhythm of our Nature Kindergarten gently shifts.

Each child settles into their special resting spot with a cozy blanket and beloved stuffy from home. Rest time is not about sleeping - it is an opportunity to slow down, calm busy bodies, and reset for the afternoon ahead.

As gentle music plays or teachers softly sing, the classroom becomes a peaceful space for reflection, relaxation, and renewal. Just as nature moves through rhythms of activity and rest, children thrive when their days include both adventure and stillness.

These quiet moments help nurture balance, well-being, and readiness for the next part of the day’s journey. 🌿

For the past month, two Rowan Tree staff members have begun each school day with a simple ritual.

After our staff morning circle, they head into the forest for a quick sweep of the play area. What started as a safety check to ensure the space was free of hazards soon evolved into something more.

On one of their early walks, they brought along tongs and bags to pick up a few pieces of litter. As often happens, one piece led to another, and before long they found themselves tending not only the play space, but surrounding areas of the forest as well.

As the days went by, their experience of the task changed. What started as a practical task became a daily practice of care, connection, and stewardship. Each morning offered an opportunity to give back to the land before the day began.

The area they have tended has continued to grow, and each week they have to walk a little farther to find litter.

Recently, a question emerged: What if this small, cared-for patch of forest just kept expanding? What if one act of stewardship inspired another?

Sometimes meaningful change begins with something as simple as showing up, caring for a place, and inviting others to do the same. 🌿

There is something deeply satisfying about spending time in a farming block with soil under your fingernails and new understanding taking root.

Over the past few weeks, our Grade 3–4 students have been exploring the remarkable world beneath their feet. They have learned how compost transforms scraps and garden waste into rich, nourishing soil, discovered the science of healthy soil ecosystems, and planted seeds with care and intention.

Through hands-on work, thoughtful observation, and plenty of curiosity, students are experiencing the cycles of growth and renewal that sustain life. This block will carry the class through the next couple of weeks, offering many more opportunities to tend the garden, deepen their understanding, and witness the quiet transformations that happen over time.

🌱 We are excited to watch both our gardens and our students continue to flourish.

Last week, our Nature Kindergarten children became boat builders.

Using natural materials, imagination, and teamwork, they created their own boats and set them afloat. While the activity was filled with joy and wonder, it was also rich with learning—strengthening fine motor skills, problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration.

At Rowan Tree, we know that meaningful play is the foundation of healthy child development. Through hands-on experiences in nature, children build confidence, resilience, and a deep sense of connection to the world around them.

Sometimes the most important learning begins with a simple idea, a few sticks, and the freedom to explore.

Why Learn Outdoors in All Seasons and Weather?

At Rowan Tree, outdoor learning is a year-round experience. We believe that every season—and every kind of weather—offers unique opportunities for growth, discovery, and connection.

Rain, snow, wind, and sunshine each invite children to observe, explore, and engage with the world in meaningful ways. Learning outdoors helps develop resilience, adaptability, confidence, and a deep appreciation for nature.

Our school day begins and ends outdoors, students enjoy a dedicated outdoor Forest School Enrichment Day at the close of every week. Physical Education, woodwork, drama, art, music, math, and literacy lessons also move outdoors throughout the year, transforming nature into a dynamic and inspiring classroom.

When children learn in all seasons, they gain more than academic knowledge—they develop the skills and confidence to thrive in an ever-changing world. 🌿❄️☀️🍂🌧️

CURRICULUM SPOTLIGHT 🌿
The Role of Play in Learning

At Rowan Tree, play is not separate from learning — it is one of the primary ways children learn.

Through imaginative play, children develop essential foundations for:
✨ language and communication
✨ problem-solving
✨ social skills
✨ emotional regulation
✨ creativity and critical thinking
✨ confidence and resilience

When children build forts, create imaginary worlds, prepare “meals” in the mud kitchen, negotiate roles in collaborative games, or care for dolls and nature treasures, they are developing complex cognitive, emotional, and social skills in deeply meaningful ways.

Play also nurtures curiosity, initiative, and joy — all important ingredients for lifelong learning.

In a world that often rushes childhood, we believe children benefit from time and space to explore, imagine, create, move, and connect. These experiences help build strong foundations not only for future academics, but for healthy human development as a whole.

At Rowan Tree, we value play as purposeful, developmentally important, and worthy of protection. 🌿
