There was a special kind of excitement in the Grade 1–2 classroom as the children gathered for their much-anticipated Cat Party—a celebration of their completed knitted cats from handwork class.
Over many weeks, small hands learned to cast on, knit stitch by knit stitch, and patiently bring their soft creations to life. There were moments of concentration, perseverance, and pride as each cat slowly took shape—each one as unique as the child who made it.
At the party, the classroom was filled with smiles and a sense of shared accomplishment. The children celebrated not just the finished cats, but the care and effort woven into every stitch.
These moments are more than a celebration of craft—they are a celebration of patience, focus, and the quiet confidence that grows when children create something meaningful with their own hands. 🐱🐾

For the past month, two Rowan Tree staff members have begun each school day with a simple ritual.
After our staff morning circle, they head into the forest for a quick sweep of the play area. What started as a safety check to ensure the space was free of hazards soon evolved into something more.
On one of their early walks, they brought along tongs and bags to pick up a few pieces of litter. As often happens, one piece led to another, and before long they found themselves tending not only the play space, but surrounding areas of the forest as well.
As the days went by, their experience of the task changed. What started as a practical task became a daily practice of care, connection, and stewardship. Each morning offered an opportunity to give back to the land before the day began.
The area they have tended has continued to grow, and each week they have to walk a little farther to find litter.
Recently, a question emerged: What if this small, cared-for patch of forest just kept expanding? What if one act of stewardship inspired another?
Sometimes meaningful change begins with something as simple as showing up, caring for a place, and inviting others to do the same. 🌿

There is something deeply satisfying about spending time in a farming block with soil under your fingernails and new understanding taking root.
Over the past few weeks, our Grade 3–4 students have been exploring the remarkable world beneath their feet. They have learned how compost transforms scraps and garden waste into rich, nourishing soil, discovered the science of healthy soil ecosystems, and planted seeds with care and intention.
Through hands-on work, thoughtful observation, and plenty of curiosity, students are experiencing the cycles of growth and renewal that sustain life. This block will carry the class through the next couple of weeks, offering many more opportunities to tend the garden, deepen their understanding, and witness the quiet transformations that happen over time.
🌱 We are excited to watch both our gardens and our students continue to flourish.

Last week, our Nature Kindergarten children became boat builders.
Using natural materials, imagination, and teamwork, they created their own boats and set them afloat. While the activity was filled with joy and wonder, it was also rich with learning—strengthening fine motor skills, problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration.
At Rowan Tree, we know that meaningful play is the foundation of healthy child development. Through hands-on experiences in nature, children build confidence, resilience, and a deep sense of connection to the world around them.
Sometimes the most important learning begins with a simple idea, a few sticks, and the freedom to explore.

CURRICULUM SPOTLIGHT 🌿
The Role of Play in Learning
At Rowan Tree, play is not separate from learning — it is one of the primary ways children learn.
Through imaginative play, children develop essential foundations for:
✨ language and communication
✨ problem-solving
✨ social skills
✨ emotional regulation
✨ creativity and critical thinking
✨ confidence and resilience
When children build forts, create imaginary worlds, prepare “meals” in the mud kitchen, negotiate roles in collaborative games, or care for dolls and nature treasures, they are developing complex cognitive, emotional, and social skills in deeply meaningful ways.
Play also nurtures curiosity, initiative, and joy — all important ingredients for lifelong learning.
In a world that often rushes childhood, we believe children benefit from time and space to explore, imagine, create, move, and connect. These experiences help build strong foundations not only for future academics, but for healthy human development as a whole.
At Rowan Tree, we value play as purposeful, developmentally important, and worthy of protection. 🌿
