Sustainable Agriculture prof Dr Thompson introduced Dr Kabir at today’s TSE seminar, Can We Achieve Agri-Food Sustainability Without Tackling Misinformation.

03/26/2025

TSE Seminar Series Thursday, March 27th, 2:00-3:00pm, ESB C205
Khondokar Kabir, Trent University
Can We Achieve Agri-Food Sustainability Without Tackling Misinformation?
Achieving sustainability in the agri-food sector is a complex challenge that requires addressing environmental, economic, and social aspects. However, the widespread spread of misinformation poses a significant barrier to progress. Misleading information about agricultural practices, food production, and sustainability solutions can lead to misguided policies, erode consumer trust, and result in the adoption of ineffective or harmful practices. This seminar talk will emphasize that tackling misinformation is not just an additional effort, but a crucial step toward achieving agri-food sustainability. By promoting science-based communication, fostering transparency, and using technology to counter false narratives, stakeholders can create a more informed and collaborative framework for sustainable agri-food systems.
Dr Khondokar Kabir is an Assistant Professor (limited term) at Trent School of the Environment and an External Associate Researcher at the University of Hamburg’s Sustainability and Climate Risks Research Unit. Previously, he was a Banting postdoctoral fellow at the University of Guelph, specializing in capacity development and extension. He earned his PhD in rural sociology from the University of Hohenheim, Germany, in 2019, focusing on extension for indigenous forest resource management. In 2021, he began his postdoctoral role as an international climate protection fellow at the University of Hamburg, supported by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
Dr Kabir has a strong publication and review record in peer-reviewed journals. His research explores the challenges faced by farming communities globally, particularly regarding information disorder, climate change, and digitalization, emphasizing the impact of information integrity on sustainable agriculture and technology adoption.
