Scott MacRae announces that there will be a fifth annual "THE CURRENT STATE OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESEARCH ACROSS SOUTHEAST ASIA" session convened at the 89th annual Society for American Archaeology meeting in New Orleans, April 17-21 2024.
If you are interested in participating, please email Scott with your abstract by September 1, 2023 at [email protected] . As usual, the symposium seeks to represent the diversity of archaeological research across Southeast Asia. This has proven to be a great opportunity for both new and established scholars.
Here is the session abstract:
"From Myanmar to the Philippines, Southeast Asia encompasses a deep history with a wide set of cultures. Over the last few decades, archaeological research in this area has experienced significant advancements in terms of theoretical approaches, methodological developments, and archaeological discoveries. New and continuing scholars and field projects have been substantially contributing to an evolving archaeological dataset. In an endeavor to present the rapidly changing state of archaeological discourse, a collection of scholars will discuss the progression and findings of research within their areas of interest. In this fashion, a diversity of topics will be presented from recent archaeological fieldwork throughout Southeast Asia. This will also assist in a continued effort to encourage a flourishing community of developing and established scholars."

The IRAW@HOA LU Project (Ninh Binh, Vietnam)
We are currently looking for graduate students interested in conducting thesis research as part of our new settlement archaeology field project in Vietnam. Interested parties can contact Professor Gyles Iannone @ [email protected]
The IRAW@HOA LU project will generate an integrated socio-ecological history for residential patterning, agricultural practices, and water management at the early Vietnamese (Đại Cồ Việt) capital of Hoa Lu (968-1010 CE). This objective will be achieved through a settlement archaeology study within the suburban (outer city) and peri-urban (urban fringe and periphery) settlement zones immediately surrounding Hoa Lu’s inner city (i.e., “royal citadels”).
