Trent researchers are discovering just how much one single-celled organism can do.

Research from Dr. Neil Emery’s lab shows that Euglena gracilis can break down toxic cyanide in cassava peel waste while producing biomass that can be harvested and added to cassava flour and garri to boost protein content.

Using CRISPR technology, the team is switching off individual genes to understand how they influence Euglena’s growth, metabolism, nutrition and behaviour, revealing surprising changes that could point to new applications.

Environmental & Life Sciences master’s student Scott Stebbing recently travelled to Vietnam’s globally significant Mekong Delta for a three-month exchange through the Queen Elizabeth Scholars (QES) program.

During his exchange, Scott studied groundwater sustainability, gained hands-on international field research experience, and developed international research connections.
