Thank you for checking out Out and About! My name is Arija Bunkis and I am the Director and Founder of Out and About. It has been a life goal to create space and time for children of all ages to explore and grow in the outdoors. My passion for learning, education and the support of my friends ignited this idea of starting a Forest School in Beachburg, ON. Our goals:
To support the holistic development of children and deepen their connection to nature as they play. To discover how nature enables us to enhance and develop self-regulation skills, self-confidence, empathy, friendship, and discover our capabilities. To learn more about the natural environment, how it supports us and how we must support it. To develop skills in the outdoors that will enable them to spend more time outside, choose play in the outdoors over screen time, pass on knowledge, and protect our green-spaces. At Out and About, we support children in becoming confident, capable people who have a sound sense of their abilities and interests, and the ability to take age-appropriate responsibility for their own safety. We believe Risky-Play is an essential part of holistic development, enabling children to discover their capabilities and boundaries that will set them up for success throughout their lives. It is okay to fail, it is okay to try again, it is okay to say no, it is okay to take a break, and it is okay to ask for help. We hope you join us in the forest and on the land!

About last week.
Colored clay.
Building shelters.
Basking in each other's company.
Embracing and playing in the rain.
Understanding the power of choice.
And a whole lot of trust.
Sometimes as adults who are responsible first, for the safety of the children at Forest School, we forget to play. It is pretty spectacular witnessing this team continue to remind themselves and each other that play is their second job.
Thank you team.
Thank you friends.
Thank you children.
Thank you, land. For it is you that gives us these opportunities to connect, play, and explore.
Just look at all this magical fun they're having.
Do you want to be a part of this learning experience?

Summer has felt fast paced and phenomenal.
Last week we built unbelievable structures in the sand.
There were competing bakeries and shops, striving to give the best customer service and food that you've ever experienced.
There was a dinosaur versus Tigers rally in the sandpit. You had to wear safety glasses to that show.
New friends bonded over mud pie recipes.
All in all, it's pretty great and we love it here

What do we offer?
Play based learning and an understanding of the power of choice. 🌞
We have our Wolf Program: ages 4-10 who are interested in learning new skills and developing confidence.
Fox Program: ages 2-5 for children developing self-reliance and regulation skills in the outdoors.
Birch and Bud: a caregiver and child program that is based in community. This program also supports parents developing language that guides their children in the outdoors to make their own choices.
We have a few spots left in each program and are excited about our new location in Petawawa!
Sign up for our mailing list to get the latest updates and news on our new location and programs in Arnprior!

See you on the land

People have said to me: " Well you're outside a lot because it's your job."
Yes. They're correct. I think they may have also forgotten that I built this job so I could be outside to witness the magic and power of play and choices.
They also might not know that being outdoors before Out and About turned me into the resilient and capable individual I am today. (out and about has only quadrupled that resilience).
They also don't know that my belief in taking accountability comes from spending so much time outside as a child and adult.
They might not know how I believe the importance of understanding the history of the Indigenous land, the people and their lessons so we too can be stewards of the earth.
They also might not know that I think they're a little nuts for not wanting to spend more time outside, because it's simply just the best.
We are excited to spend our summer outside being dirty and exhausted and full of stories to tell.
I can't wait to make memories and tap into moments years later and think "that's when this happened."
So for this alone, I hope you get outside as much as you can.
