Algonquin College Heritage Carpentry and Joinery

Our second-year students have started the year by cutting some examples of traditional joinery for doors.

The benches are oiled, the planes are sharpened, the lumber is stacked and the machines are tuned. In less than a week, we will be welcoming more than 80 new and returning students back to our shops, and we couldn't be more excited!

This fall, our Level 1 students will be exploring the fundamentals of joinery and carpentry. Our returning second-year students will be developing their craft by building traditional windows and doors, as well as timber framing.

With our school on pause for the time being, let's take a moment to look at some of the incredible work accomplished by some of our students so far.

We started raising two of our timber frames this week! Our second-year students travelled deep into the woods of Lanark and were welcomed with generous hospitality from the frames' new owners.
One of the frames is going to be used as a guest house, and the other will be a woodworking addition to a garage.

In true traditional fashion, Chris used a wooden moulding plane to shape the bead stops for his window. Just look at those shavings!

"Who needs a router?" said Dustin as he used a scratch stock to form the bead stops for his window.

Our thanks to Derek and the crew at Gibson Timber Frames for hosting us at their shop in Brockville yesterday! We got to see some gorgeous joinery and learn about the design process. And, it gave us a chance to catch up with Heritage Carpentry and Joinery graduates Luke, Dan and Todd, who all work at Gibson now.

As we get ready to start building traditional, double-hung windows, our students know that a successful project depends largely on planning and preparation.

Our second-year students are putting the final touches on their first major project of the year: traditional wooden doors. Like most of our projects, the doors can be built with traditional hand tools, contemporary machines, or a combination of both.
