The Perth Academy Pioneers hit the ground running into our accelerated learning plan focusing heavily on real work experience, with The Snow Road Project being one of the key components.

Not only are they building the timber frame structure being erected on-site, they are involved with every step of the planning stage. This ensures our Pioneers not only are advancing their carpentry skills, but they learn first-hand about the importance of precise planning, especially when it comes to laying the foundation.

Jack says it best, and bluntly, no one wants to see a dog's breakfast build.

Our Perth Academy Pioneers joined forces with students of Willowbank School of Restoration Arts at Quentin Navarre and Amy Webster’s carpentry shop last week to share their knowledge and expand their Heritage Carpentry skillset.

Jack Hollinger, Dean of The Perth Academy of Building Arts and Science, had the privilege of hosting our Willowbank guests for a week to explore the medium of Heritage Carpenters and Joiners: wood.

Their three-year Heritage Conservation Diploma balances theory with hands-on skills, and embraces the interconnections of our built, natural and cultural resources. Willowbank’s ecological approach represents a powerful response to today’s environmental and social challenges.

Fostering partnerships with such renowned institutions is a crucial step to ensuring our students deep knowledge of craftsmanship when they make their way into the Heritage Trades industry.

Over the coming year, we’ll follow a group of carpentry and joinery students as they continue their educational journey with our Perth Academy team. You’ll receive an inside look at what they’re learning in our courses and how they apply those skills to heritage renovation projects.

Learning a craft and applying it to real projects is at the heart of our vision for the Perth Academy of Building Arts and Sciences. Heritage buildings tell part of a community’s story, and their materials and craftsmanship have a lot to teach us about building things that last.

By working on heritage buildings, students learn how to preserve places that matter and what it takes to build new ones that last.
We’re looking forward to showing you their work.

ONSITE WITH PARKS CANADA 🇨🇦

This week, we had the privilege of joining John Festarini, Field Unit Director for Ontario Waterways, and his .canada team at Jones Falls Locks.

Considered one of the most photographed lockstations on the Rideau, Jones Falls has a flight of three lower locks and a turning basin separating these from the upper lock. Jones Falls is home to the “Great Stone Arch Dam” which, when completed in 1831, was the highest dam in North America at almost sixty feet. It is a true example of why maintaining Heritage Trades education is crucial to preserving our Historical Infrastructure.
