Kids love to create. And even more, they love to use what they made.
We’re thrilled to be part of Almonte Fibrefest workshop series this year. This hands-on workshop welcomes kids 8 and up to make their first basket at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum.
My First Basket is a beginners class. We start with a solid 4” plywood base, teach simple technique, and by the end every child has built a basket from scratch with their own two hands. Leaving with their first basket, one they’re proud of and can put to use for markers, pencils and collectables.
Welcoming young curious makers. Adults welcome to cheerlead and assist.

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.
The past two seasons, self heal has been my teacher.
It started in my yard, a shady patch that needed something deer-resistant. We had a great season together. I learned her cycle, harvested and dried her, infused her into oils and salves. This year, she didn’t come back.
And wouldn’t you know, while walking the fields this summer, who do I begin to see everywhere? Self heal. She’s always been there. I’m certain I ‘saw’ her before, but now I ‘see’ her. She was always right under my feet.
Then, of course, at Darling Wood Farm, guess who’s one of the first plants I spot along the path? Self heal!!!
Clearly she’s on my path for a reason.
This morning while walking on the homestead, I felt called to harvest self heal and clover to prepare a tea. Self heal still feels like a new friend to me and it’s fun and playful to get to know her more!

Later this month, Darling Wood Farm and I invite you to wander the forest and fields they steward. A sensory walk, meeting who’s always been there, waiting to be remembered.

Lanark Highlands Basketry Museum 10th Anniversary Celebrations continue!
This openwork tray displays stunning geometry as well as the natural beauty of willow. Lined with linen, these trays make great serving trays for bread, or are equally at home adorning your wall, displaying your handiwork.
Unlike many other types of baskets made with willow, these trays can be made with fresh cut and foraged willow. This makes the form both functional and beautiful, and practical for those who don’t have access to the equipment necessary for soaking willow.
We’re thrilled Johnny Suderman will be teaching this class. He’s built a name for himself as a teacher and basketmaker, making baskets and growing willow since 2018. Since 2023, he’s been operating Lakeshore Willows, founded by his teacher and mentor Lene Rasmussen.
