Barb’s Place offers behaviour intervention services for neurodiverse children and youth. We believe all children have the right to learn, laugh and play.
We are a private Behaviour Intervention Center, nestled in the heart of Kaleden on a breathtaking property with acreage, unlimited access to the outdoors and beahviour support animals that will bring a smile to your face with every tail wag. We specialize in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) but are open to discussing options for all neurodiverse who would benefit from specialized teaching. We are a
private service provider that works collaboratively with other private therapists, school districts, preschools, and daycares. We offer a variety of programs; Under SIX (one-to-one), Specialized tutoring, and Social skills groups. Our programs grow with your child, meaning they don't age out of Barb's Place, they age in to a different program! All children can learn, and the most effective skills include engagement, imitation, communication, and joint attention. These skills and learning tasks are obtained through the use of positive and proactive strategies and solving behaviour challenges. The foundation for success is a positive, fun relationship between the child and the adult. Including their behavior interventionists. Most important is family input, which is essential when developing a behavior plan. We share ideas and strategies with parents, teachers, etc. to ensure consistency across environments. In our program we use effective research-tested methods. Primarily the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis. However, one approach does not fit all programs or a child’s needs. We collectively incorporate strategies from conscious and gentle teaching, positive behaviour supports, natural environment teaching and several others. Each child’s program is specialized to their needs and all intervention results are shared with the family. The key features of our teaching methods include the following:
-One-to-one ratio or small groups
-Positive Reinforcement for teaching new skills
-Fun is included in all tasks as children learn best this way
-All tasks are broken down into teachable steps
-All goals are measurable and observable and data is collected
-Prompts are introduced and faded accordingly
-Challenging behaviours are perceived as communication and a behaviour program is designed to elevate the need for these behaviours
-All programs are continuously assessed, and changes are made accordingly
We will forever be expanding our practices and knowledge by keeping up to date on any new information regarding child development and by following the Institute of Child Psychology and any sources that explore neurodiversity. We love to continue our learning in this extraordinary field. If we believe your child would be best supported through a resource that we are unable to provide we will help you connect with the appropriate service before pausing sessions here. We are here to help you and your child reach attainable goals. We gratefully and respectfully acknowledge that we live, work, play and learn on the beautiful, ancestral, unceded territory of the Okanagan Syilx.
