Experience how massage nurtures emotional well-being, fostering self-care and body awareness post-recovery.

Recovery after breast or chest surgery is about more than how a scar looks.

Research suggests post-operative massage may support scar flexibility, movement and comfort, while also contributing to patient satisfaction and quality of life.

Feeling more comfortable in your body can be an important part of emotional recovery too.

Thoughtful, informed care matters.

After her mastectomy, this client could not lift her arm past 50 degrees.

One of the hardest parts was not being able to comfortably wash her own hair. As time passed, she began to believe this restriction was simply her new normal.

A painful or limited shoulder after surgery is not always only a shoulder problem. Scar restriction, protective movement and changes through the chest and axilla may all influence mobility.

With informed, individualized support, she began exploring what greater comfort and movement could look like again.

Sometimes recovery is measured in ordinary moments, like being able to wash your hair independently.

Massage therapists, this is why it matters to understand more than the shoulder itself.

Learn how breast and chest surgery can affect scar mobility, the axilla, protective movement and everyday function inside the Intro to Mastectomy Massage Course.

A surgical scar is not simply a mark on the skin.

The procedure may affect several layers of tissue, alter sensation and contribute to restrictions that are felt beyond the visible incision. Different breast surgeries can also involve very different tissues and anatomical areas.

Ready to understand what is happening beneath the scar?

Join Eryn Price RMT and Cathy Ryan RMT for the Science of Scar Tissue for Massage Therapists, an immersive two-day, in-person retreat in Naramata, BC, on October 30–31, 2026.

Learn about wound healing, mature and immature scars, keloid and hypertrophic scars, and evidence-informed techniques for post-operative care.

Eryn Price founded Mastectomy Guide after recognizing a significant gap in massage therapy education.

People were seeking support after mastectomy, lumpectomy, reconstruction, elective breast procedures and gender-affirming chest surgery but many massage therapists had received little or no training in this area.

Eryn has dedicated her career to changing that through clinically grounded education centred on informed care, communication, consent and humanity.
Her goal is not simply to teach techniques.

It is to help build a community of therapists who are better prepared to support people through breast and chest surgery recovery.

A scar forming does not always mean recovery is complete.

Many people continue to experience tightness, restriction, numbness, discomfort, and changes in movement after mastectomy surgery. They may be looking for a massage therapist who understands the complexity of post-surgical recovery and knows how to provide thoughtful, evidence-informed care.

This work requires more than good intentions. It requires education, clinical reasoning, appropriate timing, communication, and confidence.

The Mastectomy Guide Academy is a virtual six-month mentorship and training program for massage therapists who want to support people after breast, chest, and oncology-related surgery with greater skill and compassion.

The next Academy begins October 1, 2026.

What is a double mastectomy?

Eryn breaks down what the surgery involves and helps explain some of the changes a person may experience through recovery.

Understanding the surgery is an important first step in providing informed, supportive care after breast cancer treatment.

Save this for reference or share it with someone who may find it helpful.
