Austin Kluksdahl: A Journey Built on Resilience, Growth, and Embracing Challenges
From California to Sweden, Cornwall to the University of Oregon, Austin Kluksdahl journey is a story of perseverance, development, and becoming the best version of himself on and off the ice.
Every hockey player's journey is unique. Some paths follow a traditional route, while others require patience, courage, and the willingness to take a different direction.
Austin Kluksdahl's journey has been defined by those qualities.
From his early development in the competitive California hockey system to leaving home to play overseas, returning to North America, and now competing at the university level, Austin's path has been about much more than hockey. It has been about growth, maturity, resilience, and learning how to overcome challenges along the way.
Born in Irvine, California, Austin developed through the Anaheim Jr. Ducks AAA program, where he built a strong foundation as a left-shot defenceman. Competing at an elite level helped Austin develop the skills, discipline, and work ethic required to continue progressing in the game.
However, like many young athletes pursuing their hockey dreams, Austin's journey was not without obstacles.
Facing Challenges and Finding a New Path
During his U18 years, Austin experienced a challenging period in his development. Like many young players navigating competitive hockey, he encountered circumstances that made his path forward more difficult than expected.
At the time, those experiences were difficult to understand. However, with maturity and perspective, Austin now recognizes that those moments became valuable lessons that helped shape who he is today.
Hockey development is not always determined by talent alone. Opportunities, timing, environment, and circumstances all play a role in an athlete's journey.
Unfortunately, many talented young players experience setbacks that affect their confidence and passion for the game. Some eventually step away from hockey because of difficult experiences along the way.
Austin's story is a reminder that one challenging chapter does not have to define an athlete's future. Sometimes, finding the right environment and being willing to take a different path can change everything.
Sweden: The Turning Point
Austin eventually reached a point where he needed an environment that would allow him to continue evolving as both a player and a person.
Although he had opportunities to play Junior A hockey throughout North America, the available situations were not necessarily the environments that would provide the growth and development he needed at that stage of his career.
The decision was made to take a different route.
Austin left California and moved to Sweden to play for Åmåls SK J18.
Leaving home to live in another country at a young age requires courage, independence, and maturity. Austin had to adapt to a new culture, a different style of hockey, and life away from everything familiar.
The experience challenged him far beyond the hockey rink.
The goal was not simply to find somewhere to play. It was to find an environment where Austin could grow, become more independent, and continue developing the habits and mindset needed to reach the next level.
Having the opportunity to coach Austin during this important chapter of his career, I saw firsthand his commitment, willingness to learn, and desire to improve every day.
Sweden became the turning point in Austin's hockey journey.
It helped him mature as a person, strengthened his confidence, and prepared him for the opportunities that followed.
Establishing Himself in the CCHL
The growth Austin experienced in Sweden created the foundation for his next opportunity.
Returning to North America for his 20-year-old season, Austin earned an opportunity with the Cornwall Colts of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL).
This was an important step in his development. Austin was able to establish himself, contribute consistently, and continue building confidence while competing at a high level of Junior A hockey.
His season with Cornwall was not just about statistics. It was about showing that the experiences, challenges, and lessons he embraced in Sweden had prepared him for the next stage of his career.
Austin had developed into a more mature, confident, and dependable player.
That season also helped create the opportunity for Austin to continue his academic and hockey journey at the University of Oregon.
The University Transition
The transition from junior hockey to university is one of the biggest adjustments many players face.
The expectations increase. The schedule becomes more demanding. Student-athletes must learn how to balance academics, training, competition, and personal responsibilities.
Austin embraced that challenge when he joined the University of Oregon hockey program.
The next stage of his development was not only about becoming a better hockey player. It was about becoming a better student, teammate, and person.
Today, I continue working with Austin as his mental performance coach and mentor, helping him navigate the challenges that come with university life.
Our weekly conversations focus on the personal and logistical situations that arise in his daily routine, including managing pressure, anxiety, responsibilities, confidence, and maintaining balance as a student-athlete.
Austin understands that success requires attention to every area of development—physically, mentally, academically, and personally.
As Austin explains:
"The transition from juniors to university was a big jump for me athletically and academically. Thankfully, I have Bryant in my corner as a trusted advisor and life coach. We have weekly conversations and I can reach out to him at any point for advice.
Working with Bryant has been advantageous to my student life as he keeps up with my workload, helps create study plans, and guides my time management skills, especially during the busy hockey season.
Bryant is an invaluable resource because he has helped me significantly and the advice he provides is genuine as he has gone through balancing school and hockey himself."
The Journey Continues
Austin Kluksdahl's story is a reminder that development is rarely a straight line.
Sometimes the biggest growth comes from the moments that challenge us the most—the moments that require us to adapt, learn, and continue moving forward.
Sweden was the turning point. Cornwall was the opportunity to establish himself. University hockey is the next chapter.
But beyond hockey, Austin's journey represents something greater: the growth of a young man who has learned resilience, embraced challenges, and continued to believe in his ability to improve.
The qualities that have carried Austin throughout his journey remain the same: commitment, humility, resilience, and the desire to become better every day.
His journey is far from over, and the best chapters are still ahead.
