The 2026-2027 school year is almost here! Classes resume September 8, 2026.

School staff return the week of August 31. Starting that week, families can contact their local school about student registration, school bus information or any other Back To School questions.

Summer School 2026 Registration Update

Due to high demand, Northland School Division is no longer accepting out-of-division registrations for Summer School.

Registration remains open for current Northland School Division students until Monday, July 6.

Students can catch up, move ahead, or earn credits in a flexible online environment.

This week, our online school community came together to showcase our Spring Play, and what an incredible performance it was!

Our students demonstrated creativity, confidence, teamwork, and dedication. A special thank you goes to our staff members who helped bring this production to life through their guidance, encouragement, and countless hours of preparation, with huge kudos to Ms. Amy Jevne for making this all happen with her creative talents.

Online learning extends far beyond academics, and this production was a wonderful reminder of the talent, passion, and community spirit that make our school so special.

As the 2025-2026 school year wraps up, I want to thank all parents, guardians, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community members and education partners. Your support, involvement and guidance continue to make a difference for Northland students.

Whether you attended a school event, shared feedback, supported learning at home, joined a school council or principal’s advisory committee, or helped guide learning through culture, language and community connection, your role matters.

Northland School Division’s Education Plan continued to guide the work happening across the division this year. The plan is connected to student learning, culture, language, land-based learning, community voice, staff support and future pathways for students.

Highlights from 2025-2026:

- We celebrated 67 students during graduation ceremonies in Anzac, Calling Lake, Wabasca-Desmarais, Paddle Prairie and Northland Online School.

- Early results show the Education Plan is helping guide positive change. High school completion increased by 17 per cent compared to the previous three-year average, more students are continuing into post-secondary education or apprenticeship training, student satisfaction improved, and the dropout rate decreased.

- Northland continued targeted engagement with the communities we serve to support the review of the Education Plan and keep it connected to community voice, student needs and shared priorities.

- Students took part in meaningful learning connected to culture, language, land-based learning, athletics, CTS, dual credit, career pathways, literacy, numeracy and leadership.

- The Superintendent’s Youth Council and Elders/Knowledge Keepers Council continued to provide important guidance connected to student voice, culture, language, land and community.

- Planning funding for a replacement Paddle Prairie School marked an important step forward for students, families and Paddle Prairie Métis Settlement.

As Northland looks ahead to 2026-2027:

- Building connections between schools and the communities we serve will remain a key focus.

- Local education plans, literacy, numeracy, assessment and student learning needs will guide school planning.

- Connections to land, language, culture and local history will remain central to the Education Plan.

- Hands-on learning, Career and Technology Studies (CTS), dual credit, career pathways, athletics, cultural activities and student leadership will continue to support student learning.

- Staff professional learning will focus on Truth and Reconciliation, Wahkohtowin, new programs of study, data literacy and Collaborative Response.

As I prepare for retirement, I want to share my sincere thanks. Northland is a special place. I am grateful for the relationships built over the years and for the opportunity to work alongside students, staff, families and the communities we serve. The voices of the communities we serve have guided this work, and I am proud of the direction Northland has taken.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank parents, guardians, community members and education partners for your support, partnership and trust throughout the 2025-2026 school year. Your involvement continues to play an important role in helping Northland students thrive.

Northland School Division’s Education Plan continued to guide our work this year. The plan reflects the voices of students, parents, guardians, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, staff, Trustees and the communities we serve. During the 2025-2026 school year, Northland continued to listen through more targeted engagement. This helped support the review of the plan and confirmed that our direction remains connected to community voice, student needs and shared priorities.

One of the most meaningful steps forward this year was the approval of planning funding for a replacement Paddle Prairie School. This milestone reflects years of advocacy by the Board of Trustees, with support from Administration and Paddle Prairie Métis Settlement. In June, Northland joined the settlement, the Government of Alberta, students, families, staff and community partners to celebrate this important step. There is still work ahead, but this is a major milestone for students, families and the settlement.

I encourage everyone to take a moment to review the first two Tri-Annual Reports for 2025-2026. They highlight many examples of how the Education Plan is coming to life across Northland School Division.

The third and final report will be published in September and will include a celebration of this year’s graduates.

I also want to recognize Superintendent of Schools and CEO Cal Johnson as he prepares for retirement. Cal has served Northland with steady leadership, strong relationships and a deep belief in the power of education. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you, Cal, for your service and commitment to Northland students, families, staff and the communities we serve. We wish you and your family all the best in retirement.

As we head into the summer, we hope you find time to rest and enjoy special moments with your family. We look forward to welcoming students back in the fall and continuing this important work together.
