Our Sprouts today were ready to explore! We focused on leaves, painting with lead ink and searching for matching colours and different sizes - we found the tiniest and the biggest!
On our walk we noticed so many curiosities: sapsucker holes, seedy s**t, milkweed pods, chipmunk holes and pileated woodpecker holes. We documented these on our homemade map to help us remember.
At Rockwall we enjoyed a story about fox and his special tree losing its leaves. We built forts with sticks and heavy stones. We loved climbing and balancing and imagining on the big logs and rocks.
We had to hurry back but couldn’t help gathering all the beautiful leaves on the way. We’re thankful for the sun and… leaves!

🌱Sprouts - Week 3!🌱

Week 3’s session was a base camp day - with special visitors and important conversations!

We began with a slow start to gather our friends (a small but mighty group this week!) colouring together on the chalk board, using fine motor control to thread leaves into a garland, cooking delicious soups in the mud kitchen, and bouncing together on the slack line!

At Morning Circle, we were joined by Rose, who lead a beautiful conversation for the National Day of Truth & Reconciliation. She told each child there that they are special, important, loved and how every child should be treated that way. We then sang I Can Feel My Heartbeat to connect us all together, before exploring a deer hide shaker. We also read Boozhoo! Hello! a story written in both Anishinaabemowin, the language of this land, and English. We learned many animals first names and enjoyed the details in the pictures. After the story, we also were grateful to explore a deer hide drum, as well.

After Morning Circle, we had our second visitor of the day, the marvellous Miss Meagan from the DSSAB, arrive. Miss Meagan brought us some incredible resources to explore measurements with. We used cubes and string to measure leaves, pumpkins, pinecones, and even our height! We also learned that our arm span is the same as our height, so we went and hugged different trees to see which ones were as round as we were tall! After the measuring activities, we switched gears to art and creativity, using found forest treasures to create colourful collages in the shape of acorns and leaves! The children enjoyed finding their art in nature and used a variety of items and textures.

We then had snack, went into free play, and then Miss Meagan read us an interactive book that had all of us engaged, excited to see where it would take us! Once the story was done, we realized our day almost was too! So, we moved into a close circle and shared our daily gratitude from the session before we joined together to sing the Baamapii Song!

We are looking forward to watching the forest shift around us the next coming weeks! 🍂🪾

Forest families had a great morning of leaf play!
We were creative using leaf ink for mark making and playdough with nature items to explore textures.
Some of us went on a grand adventure with nature treasure scavenger hunt cards.
We also enjoyed moving our bodies and experiencing all the fallen leaves and pine needles around camp that were great for raking and sliding on, strengthening our big muscles.
And of course the classics continue to be a hit: slack line invites us to balance and be mindful of our friends, Wabooz teaches us to be gentle, and the hammocks invite us to look up and rest.
We’re grateful for all these things.

🌱Sprouts Week 2!🌱

We started our sunny session with a slow start, still getting to know base camp and all that it offers! We cooked in the mud kitchen, climbed on roots and logs, bounced on the slack line, and even stopped to smell the flowers in our gitigan!

At Morning Circle, we discussed the plan for our day. We worked together to examine the map of our Forest, trying to follow our path while figuring out how to cross the pond! We introduced Amik (Beaver) as we worked out where the bridge in the pond came from, and then we set off on an adventure to The Junipers!

We had snack when we arrived at The Junipers, and then broke into explorative play. Some noticed a half-completed fort, and continued to build upon it and reconstruct other parts. Others were inspired and wanted to make their own forts fresh - with our chipmunk friends in mind! Some engaged their big muscles and developed their gross motor skills as we navigated a rock slide (as the children dubbed it) up and down the slope. We also took time to notice the nature around us, many becoming excited and intrigued by the fallen and coloured leaves. Some of us worked together to collect a variety of leaf specimens and compared their colours, shapes, and sizes.

When we returned from our adventure back to base camp, we realized it was almost home time! So, we gathered for Baamapii Circle. We had just enough time to explore the Amik bin, discovering why Amik’s teeth are orange, how thick their fur is, and examining their special tail and feet! After, we shared our gratitudes of the day and sang the Baama Song all together!

We are so excited to meet again and see what Week 3 brings!🌱✨

Canadore After School Update ☀️🍁

A new season, a new month, soaking in the precious evening light and warm air.

We have been busy creating, building, talking, running, playing.. making the most of each day.

We explored the shoreline and spotted many tracks.
We watched the flyers visiting the pond.
We tried using sap forest glue and painted wood cook creations.

And so much more!

We’re happy to celebrate the amazing local businesses that support Parry Sound community across a multitude of sectors.
