When art is academic

There’s a lot of learning tucked into these autumn pumpkins!

Our young artists painted lines in acrylic, cut curved pumpkin sections, pieced them back together, and arranged layered, three-dimensional leaves.

Each step practises skills that support academic work:

• Brush control and line work: hand control and spacing used in handwriting.
• Cutting: hand-eye coordination and using both hands together.
• Reassembling: spatial reasoning and understanding how parts form a whole.
• Composition and layering: planning, placement, and problem-solving.

Following the steps also gives children practice in focus, sequencing, and perseverance, with plenty of room for their own creative choices.

If someone asked me to describe what it feels like to teach on these gorgeous fall days, surrounded by a group of eager, happy children, I’m not sure I could put it into words.

It’s a feeling more than anything.

It’s the deep sense of knowing you are doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right place.

There is something so special about feeding these littles, spending our days outside together, and having the privilege of sharing in their growth, their discoveries, and their joy.

I don’t know that I could ever fully convey what these days mean to me.

But my heart is very full this fall

Fall has arrived, and with it comes our wonderfully changeable weather.

With rain in the forecast this week, please help your children come prepared to stay warm, dry, and comfortable while they enjoy their time outdoors.

A quick check of your local forecast each morning can help make sure they’re dressed for the day ahead. Waterproof layers, good footwear, and a little extra warmth can go a long way toward helping kids enjoy nature in every kind of weather.

September in our Kindergarten–Grade 2 classroom is all about strong foundations!

Our Grade 1 and 2 students are reviewing familiar skills, while our Kindergarten students are beginning to explore many of these concepts for the first time. We’re working with number lines, ten frames, counters, and number bonds while also building the routines and confidence that will carry us through the year.

We’re not rushing ahead. We’re making sure the foundations are solid first.

I LOVE fall. Autumn is such a season of comfort and we kicked off the end of summer this week with a complimentary color oil pastel pumpkin project!

I'm going to carry this lesson through all of our grades this week in varying levels of difficulty and independence but the K-2 class might be hard to live up to.

Art teaches students to observe carefully, notice relationships, and translate ideas into concrete form.

In geometry, students explore symmetry, proportion, and shape. In science, they learn to record observations accurately and understand structure and design in the natural world. In literacy, art strengthens storytelling, symbolism, and the ability to communicate complex ideas. In history, it provides a direct connection to the beliefs and cultures of past civilizations.

Neurologically, art engages multiple regions of the brain simultaneously. It integrates sensory input, memory, executive functioning, and motor coordination. This type of whole-brain learning builds stronger neural pathways and deepens understanding across all subjects.
Perhaps most importantly, art teaches students to slow down, think carefully, and take pride in producing work of lasting quality.

For this reason, art should never be treated as a secondary subject. It is a foundational discipline

Not every new idea in education is progress. And not every old idea was a problem.

After 22 years in education, I’ve watched a lot of ideas come and go. Some of those changes have been valuable. Some of the old ways were worth keeping.

Children still need high expectations, responsibility, resilience, good books, real-world skills, and the chance to work through disagreements and difficult curricula instead of being protected from every uncomfortable moment.

Because character matters just as much as academics do. And in a time when genuine connection is struggling, helping children become the kind of people who can build strong, authentic friendships matters too.
