Speech prosody is: “the musical aspect of speech, including its melody (intonation) and its rhythm (stress and timing)”

There is a powerful connection researched between music and emotional experience that I read about this week. Speech prosody is a window to emotion in our communication, and in the study the researchers were exploring the parallels between music and speech in terms of how emotions are expressed.

What they found is that musical training drastically enhances a person’s ability to decode emotions from speech and within themselves.

The study worked with 7 year old children, and after only 1 year of formal training they had heightened identification of emotions through spoken sentences. Emotional receptivity is a powerful tool for us to carry with us through life. This short list would have compounding effects for how we interact with others and also develop our own self awareness.

We often say that "music speaks when words can't", but this is a reminder for us the power it has for us to listen and understand as well.

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Julia Davids and the Canadian Chamber Choir will lead a vocal workshop for Choir Camp singers on Wednesday, July 12. Here’s a little bit more about the Canadian Chamber Choir:

The Canadian Chamber Choir is a national ensemble of professional level choral artists who travel from across the country to promote Canadian music and build community through singing. Under the leadership of Julia Davids, the choir convenes in a different region of Canada at least twice a year, offering concerts and mentoring choral practitioners of all ages and stages.

Wherever the Canadian Chamber Choir performs, they are met with praise for their expressive, committed interpretations, and their warm enthusiasm for sharing their gifts in the community. Concerts feature world premieres on every tour, workshops draw singers at any ability-level into vibrant musicmaking, and masterclasses offer conductors and composers hands-on experience with one of the finest choirs on the continent.

Yesterday at baby group we swayed, sang, clapped, challenged our voices, learned some new songs and sing language to accompany words to songs. Thanks for our special guest Lauren for teaching us some new songs and allowing the little ones to explore her instruments. Below is a short clip of the last lullaby song Lauren sang for us.

It means a lot for me to show up for other people's voices, to help them become creators of new musical journeys, to support people through listening, questioning, and guidance along the way. We all need a little help staying in good humour on a lifelong path, and we can all use some feedback and guidance to help us save time and believe in our own breakthroughs.

There was a time it was hard for me to believe or understand what was vocally possible for myself, and I definitely have felt discouraged on my musical journey at times. I have had help along the way that truly has felt like an illumination of a path forward, to empower me to create results and to awaken desire for more, through renewed connection to making music and helping others.

It's an honour to create space that helps people who seek alignment, connection to their creativity, and learning through not only our minds but through the innate wisdom of our bodies. Our ability to sing evolved before language, and when we coach we purposefully use language to engage our conscious and unconscious minds. In seeking an improvement in our singing, we also intentionally access embodied cognition. We expand our awareness and learn through experience, guided by experience.
