It’s National AccessAbility Week (NAAW), an opportunity to celebrate Canadians with disabilities, as well as raise awareness for the critical need for fully accessible and inclusive communities, campuses and workplaces.

As a Carleton student, Martin Anderson (BCOMM/94), along with a group of fellow students and other collaborators, helped launch the Dedicated Access Fund, an initiative that continues to support accessibility improvements across campus more than 35 years later.

Today, Martin is a general counsel with the Department of Justice, working on complex cases in the immigration law sector. Read about how Martin’s accessibility advocacy journey started at Carleton and has continued throughout his career as a lawyer.

Happy International Jazz Day! Alumnus Petr Cancura (BMUS/01) has combined his passions for music and community through his role as the Ottawa Jazz Festival’s Executive and Artistic Director.🎶

After graduating from the music program, he stayed connected to his alma mater by making music with fellow alumni, reconnecting with professors and eventually finding his way back to Carleton as an artist-in-residence. Now, he leads the Roots ensemble, creating a space where students can collaborate and grow creatively. 🎷

Hear more about how Petr’s work brings artists together both on stage and behind the scenes, and what he is most looking forward to in this year’s lineup.

Reflecting on World Water Day - Alumni 04/29/2026

As another academic year comes to a close, Carleton’s newest cohort of graduates are looking ahead to where their degrees might take them. Recent alum, Dr. Robbie Venis (PhD/22), shares how the knowledge, skills and experiences gained through post-secondary education — including here at Carleton — has led to a purposeful career focusing on something many people take for granted: clean water that flows reliably from the tap.

Robbie reflects on his career journey — from graduate research focused on improving access to safe drinking water in Longido, Tanzania, to his current role as a process engineer with AECOM, where he helps design and improve water treatment systems for communities across Canada. Along the way, he shares his perspective on World Water Day 2026 and the opportunities and challenges shaping Canada’s water industry.

For the final day of National Volunteer Week, we’re sharing a Q&A with Carleton alum, William Jones, (BEng/09). William recently launched a student entrepreneurship group, helping to bridge the gap between the classroom and industry and create new opportunities for alumni and industry experts to connect with current engineering students and give back by sharing their time and expertise.

The group's first event featured an insightful talk with fellow alum, Thomas Fletcher on his experience starting and scaling a business, from prototype to product.

As National Volunteer Week continues, we’re reflecting on an important milestone for Carleton’s Hong Kong Alumni Chapter—40 years of connection and community.

Led by dedicated volunteer and alum Daniel Chan (BCOMM/85), the chapter continues to grow, reconnecting alumni who once braved Ottawa winters and later built their lives in Hong Kong. While the chapter marked its 40th anniversary last November, its mission remains unchanged: to bring alumni together, strengthen lifelong friendships, and proudly share the Carleton spirit across Hong Kong.
