Going on a retirement home tour? Here are a few questions you may not think to ask.

If you’re looking for an inclusive retirement residence for yourself or someone you love, consider asking:

🏳️‍🌈 How do you support same-sex couples?
🏳️‍🌈 What training do staff receive around 2SLGBTQI+ inclusion?
🏳️‍🌈 How are transgender residents supported?
🏳️‍🌈 How does the residence approach different family structures and relationships?
🏳️‍🌈 Can residents help shape social activities and programming?

These questions aren't about finding a “perfect” residence.

They’re about learning how a community works and deciding whether it feels like the right fit for your family.

And if you don't know what questions to ask, that's okay too. That's part of what eldercare planning can help with.

Choosing a retirement residence isn't just about finding somewhere to live, it’s about finding somewhere to feel at home.

Bonjour à tous, ici Jean de Tea and Toast. Je voulais simplement dire qu'il nous arrive parfois de devoir faire des choses auxquelles nous ne sommes pas vraiment habitués. Aujourd'hui, j'ai dû me rendre dans une résidence pour récupérer un contrat destiné à une dame qui emménage la semaine prochaine. C'est une de mes clientes ; elle m'a demandé de m'en occuper car elle est hospitalisée, que sa seule famille n'est pas en ville en ce moment et qu'il est important que le contrat soit signé avant son emménagement. Je suis donc allé le chercher, je l'ai déposé à l'hôpital, elle l'a fait signer, puis je l'ai récupéré pour le rapporter à la résidence. Tout le monde est content, et surtout la cliente, puisqu'elle va pouvoir emménager la semaine prochaine. Voilà, c'est tout. Il y a des moments où il faut se montrer particulièrement serviable envers certains de nos clients. Passez une excellente journée.

Every 2SLGBTQI+ senior has a different story.

For some, advocating for themselves has been part of life for decades.

Some have experienced discrimination in healthcare or housing. Others simply want reassurance that they can bring their partner into a retirement community and be treated with the same respect as any other couple. Some may want 2SLGBTQI+ social activities and programming. Others may not.

There is no single 2SLGBTQI+ experience, and there is no single definition of what the “right” retirement residence looks like. That’s why we encourage families to share their story when they begin planning.

Tell your Eldercare Planner what matters to you, what makes you feel comfortable, and whether there are concerns you want them to keep in mind.

Finding the right fit is about more than care and amenities. It’s about dignity, respect and belonging.

Part of why we tour with families is of course to make sure you have all your questions answered and all the information you need to make the best decision for your loved one, and also because each home is so unique, there will be unique features to look for to help find the best fit. For example, if someone is looking for a retirement home with a pool, a pool with a beach area might tip the scale more one way or the other, and you can't tell that from a spreadsheet 😎

Je voulais simplement partager avec vous ma visite d'une résidence que je connaissais déjà ; c'est toujours utile de faire une petite piqûre de rappel et de signaler que certains établissements proposent des aménagements vraiment originaux. Cette résidence dispose d'une piscine avec une petite zone façon « plage » intégrée, ainsi que de quelques machines à coudre et d'une salle de loisirs ; d'autres établissements proposent du minigolf ou des simulateurs de golf. On trouve toutes sortes d'équipements et d'activités dans les résidences pour retraités à travers la ville.
