Cataracts affect more than 2.5 million Canadians and remain the leading cause of vision loss in Canada.

Cataract Awareness Month is an opportunity to highlight the role ophthalmologists play in diagnosing, managing, and treating this condition throughout the patient journey.

From early assessment to surgery and follow-up care, patient outcomes depend on timely access.

A Historic Moment for Vision Health in Canada

On June 4, 2026, the Minister of Health tabled Canada’s first-ever National Eye Care Strategy in the House of Commons — a landmark step forward for vision health.

This coordinated federal strategy prioritizes:
🔹 Prevention & early detection of eye disease
🔹 Timely, affordable access to care
🔹 Equity for underserved & remote communities
🔹 Research, innovation & better data
🔹 Improved outcomes for Canadians living with vision loss

For ophthalmology and the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, this marks an important milestone. Ophthalmologists across Canada have long advocated for a national approach to protecting sight and addressing avoidable vision loss.

We look forward to continued collaboration with government and partners to ensure this strategy delivers meaningful improvements in eye care access and patient outcomes.
