What makes teaching materials count? It's not delivery alone.

At , CODE was proud to facilitate and moderate the session, From Delivery to Impact: Making Teaching Materials Count. The discussion brought together research, policy, and classroom experience to explore how teaching and learning materials can have the greatest impact on foundational learning.

We were pleased to showcase the Malawi experience through Julie Donohue-Kpolugbo and Agatha Njunga from CODE, alongside colleagues from the Ntchisi District Education Office (NDEO) and Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi - fawema Their experiences highlighted the importance of strong government leadership, teacher support, and local partnerships in improving literacy outcomes.

One message resonated throughout the session: teaching materials alone do not improve learning. Their impact depends on how they are used in classrooms, supported through teacher development, coaching, school leadership, and community engagement.

Thank you to the ADEA - Association for the Development of Education in Africa and the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, Malawi, for hosting and creating such a valuable space for African-led learning, exchange, and collaboration. We are also grateful to FAWEMA, the NDEO, and our colleagues from and , whose evidence, experience, and practical insights made our session so engaging and relevant.

What makes teaching and learning materials truly effective in the classroom?

We're excited that CODE's Julie Donohue-Kpolugbo will be participating in a panel discussion at in Malawi, exploring exactly that question. Drawing on our Let's Read Ntchisi pilot project, Julie will highlight how collaboration with Ntchisi District education leaders and the Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi - fawema is helping move teaching materials beyond classroom shelves and into everyday learning.

Lasting change happens when communities, educators, health systems, and young people come together with a shared purpose.

Over the past five years, our iHEARD project has delivered measurable results for adolescent girls and young women in . An independent endline evaluation found that the project's overall sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) outcome increased from 59.1% at baseline to 96.7% at endline. SRHR knowledge reached 81.3% of young people, satisfaction with SRHR information increased to 76.9%, and 92.3% of participants reported being treated with respect when accessing health services. The evaluation also highlighted lasting institutional change, including the Ministry of Education's adoption of the FAWEMA Mother Group model and the approval of three age-segmented puberty books for use in schools.

We are proud to have coordinated this partnership and to have worked alongside dedicated local organizations, government institutions, and communities to help create lasting impact.

Earlier today, our Summit for Literacy team began their ascent of . Over the coming days, they'll take on Africa's highest peak to help create brighter futures through literacy.

Every step they take is in support of our Reading Tanzania project, helping provide children with books, strengthen literacy instruction, and equip teachers with the tools they need to inspire the next generation of readers.
