Florence Child Care

Florence Child Care To be a model for Early Childhood Educators in training, by participating in placement programs offered by various teaching institutions.

Mission Statement:

To provide high quality, affordable child care to the surrounding community that continually meets the developmental needs of each child and family. To provide learning opportunities following an Emergent Curriculum. An emergent curriculum recognizes each child’s individual interests, learning style and development. Our program will use observations to ensure that each child’s

individual development is being supported. We believe that children learn through play, and that it’s our job to facilitate that learning by providing experiences and materials that foster their natural curiosity and joy in discovery.

Our first zucchini! Paula put it on our pizza and it was delicious!

Watching food grow and seeing the direct connection between the garden to the food on our plates is community and knowledge building- fostering empathy, thankfulness and respect of Earth and her gifts, as well as Paula and her gift of food preparation to us.

We returned from our July Closure to a thriving garden out front, some small visitors and the sad sight of the much loved crab able tree having lost a big part of her branches in a storm.

Nature does her thing and we thank the plants for producing beautiful things to look at and eat, as well as thank Apple tree for the many many year of apples and shade. And now she is providing the children a place to climb and discover, collect and explore up close. I’m excited to see how they interact with the tree and her offerings.

Seeing the gardens invite more creatures brings joy and excitement and the knowledge that our community is more than just humans, it includes all beings.

Making a case for real life manipulatives and materials in children’s play.

Kelly and I spent an hour trying to source affordable water play items. Cost per amount of items on childcare stores meant a limited amount for a high cost.

And then we realized, with a little creativity, we could source most items from hardware stores at a lower cost for higher durability materials. With a little help from an employee, we got gutters cut down to size, pipes and drains of different sizes. A community member donated hard hats, and Kelly found plastic spools and a coffee table on the side of the road. We had a very active yard with construction work, dismantling the table, using the spools as wheelchairs and cars, aqueduct building and hands on learning about the flow of water.

These materials have become part of the ecology of the yard and their play. As educators, we have ideas about how things will be used, and every time they impress us with their ingenuity, creativity and experimentation. Truly magical to watch them engage in their own unique ways.

A kind community member and restaurant owner donated milk crates to us after seeing a post we shared.

They are well loved and frequently used to stack, to collect, as a net or a seat. The options are endless!

Thank you!!!!

A very full heart after yesterday’s Lizzie Garden Day. Months of planning, generous gifts and a long weekend Saturday where the community showed up to clean yards, transport dirt, build planters, and plant are just the beginning of this community garden. Liz left us with a legacy of relationship building, love of the outdoors and a the value of believing in children’s capabilities as equal members of the community.

Toddlers, preschoolers and school age children all pitched in to build planters, spread dirt on tire mountain and water the gardens. The Florence adults shared their knowledge of plants and gardening, fixing skills and heavy work, contributing to lightening the load of the educators who are thrilled to tackle jobs we haven’t had the time to do.
