Sustainability at Carleton isn’t a target on a page. It’s our students pushing for a greener future, our faculty finding real solutions, and our staff making thoughtful decisions every day. It’s a commitment we take seriously and one we’re always working to live up to.
We are proud to share our 2025 Sustainability Annual Report, a look at the progress we’ve made, the challenges still ahead, and the community making it all possible.

With a tiny forest coming to campus this fall, you might be wondering: What is a tiny forest? And why add one to campus?
A tiny forest is a densely planted community of native plants, including trees and shrubs, intended to recreate a forest environment. They are based the method developed by the Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. 🌳
Tiny forests are good for people and the environment! Interacting with nature can help reduce stress and improve well-being. 😌
Tiny forests can also help improve air quality, absorb rainwater, and sequester carbon. They also provide a habitat for insects and wildlife! 🐝

Facilities Management and Planning is partnering with to bring a tiny forest to campus this fall! 🍃
Here are 3 facts to know about this new community green space:
1. Location: The tiny forest will be located on the north end of campus, in front of the Tennis Centre on University Drive. It will be just off the footpath, so passers-by can pause to relax and enjoy the forest atmosphere! 😌
2. Composition: To recreate a forest environment, the tiny forest will consist of 3 layers of native plants: a canopy layer, a shrub layer, and a forest floor layer. Potential species for planting include white spruce 🌲, Canadian elderberry 🫐, and smooth aster 🌼.
3. Size: The site is about 200 metres squared in total. Approximately one tree will be planted per square metre, so the tiny forest will be home to about 200 trees! 🌳
We will be looking for volunteers within the campus community to assist with planting this fall. Stay tuned for more information closer to the planting time!
