An exciting upcoming Carleton Film Studies Seminar! "Eccentric Points of View in Film and Virtual Reality" with Philippe Bédard.
When: Friday, February 26th, 2021
Pre-talk socializing: 9:45-10:00 AM EST
Talk and discussion: 10:00-11:00 AM EST
About the topic: "How do cinema and virtual reality allow us to experiment with ways of seeing or being in the world that differ from our own experience? "Exo-centric images” offer us an answer. Namely, as a technique that creates a point of view outside the body, the exo-centric image creates a new experience of the world by reversing the hierarchy of body-space relations. Found throughout the history of film and moving image media, this technique destabilizes the body’s central position in our experience of the world by immobilizing it at the centre of the frame. Virtual Reality adds a layer of complexity to this reversal by allowing us to enter in an eccentric relation with ourselves."
About our presenter: "Philippe Bédard is a postdoctoral researcher in Film Studies at Carleton University, working on questions of empathy and embodiment in Virtual Reality experiences. His area of expertise concerns the relations between bodies, cameras, and spaces in film and moving image media at large. In addition to his dissertation on filmmaking techniques in relation to the body, Philippe has also published work on camera movement, GoPro cameras, Virtual Reality, screendance, and virtual production."
We hope to see you there ✨
