4th-year history seminar on museum provenance research

Provenance information (the documented origins and succession of ownership of an artifact) has multiple uses in museums and beyond. By tracing the history of an artifact from its creation to present, we build basic cataloguing information, create meaningful connections to people, places, events and activities, raise questions about authenticity, and confront ethical and legal issues related to own

Some cool information that I never realized before is that botanical gardens also keep a record of provenance. Many of them are very interested in this and are kind of like living museums.

Replica of Van Leeuwenhoek's microscope 12/02/2012

This is an ad that I found regarding my replica. It is later than my replica was made, 1950s ad.
It actually shows and talks about how Van Leeuwenhoek was significant to science instead of talking about their product. It reads "A most significant event was the discovery of bacteria in 1675 by Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek who used a primitive microscope of his own manufacture. Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. Rochester NY.-Americas Leading Optical Institution" and pictures Van Leeuenhoek showing off his invention. Maybe this is why they actually made replicas. Was it for advertising?

Ontario Historic Plaque: The ZEEP Reactor 12/02/2012

I found this little gem today. It is a book that was published in 1989 by Natural Heritage/Natural History Inc. for the Ontario Heritage Foundation. It contains a description of all the plaques since the program began in 1956 and also lists the location of all the plaques throughout the province.
ZEEP plaque location "In front of the public information centre at Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories, off Highway 17, about 8km northwest of Chalk River."
