Happy Family Day!
I hope whatever you are doing brings you laughter and joy đź©·
Please reach out for parenting support!
I have worked with families and a wide age range of children in group homes, drop-in centres, women's shelters, school settings, the nonprofit housing sector, teenage parent support, and children's mental health agencies. Families that are together, divorced, same s*x, multiple partners, extended family, adopted family and not your average definition of family.
Let me help you parent less, so you can enjoy being a parent more!

F**k! It's Friday.
All right parents, we're heading into the weekend!
Ah, remember when the weekend meant 48 hours of nonstop doing whatever the hell you wanted to do? Well, F**k! Now it's 48 hours of magical moments in addition to trying to survive the needs/wants/desires/demands of the kiddos you're raising. Slow down, enjoy those magical moments and try to have some humour about the rest. I mean, I wish I could walk into a bank, throw myself on the ground, and start kicking and screaming until they gave me more money ... maybe our kiddos are on to something?

Wreckage Wednesday: Parenting Fails.
Ever wish you could turn time back just a little bit and handle a situation with your kiddo differently? I know I sure do! There's no perfect approach - what works in the moment is working in the moment, and sometimes that's the best that we can do. What we can do is look back, reflect, adjust, and (try really hard to) change our delivery for next time. Remember; you don't start with all the answers, parenting is a learning process.
Here's a parenting fail of mine: using candy and junk food during a more trying day (it was more of a "trying to reason with a volcano not to erupt" kind of day) to encourage my kiddo to listen during errands. There was a lot of bribing that day. There was a lot of junk food that day. There was A LOT of barf that evening. Lesson learned.
Talk To Me Tuesday: Ask Me Anything (the cool kids say AMA).
Have a question about what I posted yesterday? Curious about how to handle a situation? Want to vent a little about a hurdle you're struggling with? Care to share a win? Talk to me! There's no manual for parenting, there's doing your very best and trying to improve on that. Let's learn, navigate, and figure this whole parenting thing out together.

Mouthful Monday: Regulation.
Self-regulation, co-regulation, emotional regulation, dysregulation. What's all this regulation about anyway?
My favourite way of explaining regulation is: bringing your emotions and body back to a state of calm or reason.
So how do we help our kiddos do this when our 4 year old is on the floor screaming (dysregulation) at us because we handed them the wrong colour mega block? Well, and this might be a bit unconventional - we don't. We wait, we act supportive, we give them a space and an outlet to let all of that "icky" out. We (try very hard to) keep ourselves calm (self-regulation), model the behaviour that we want to see, and be their guiding sail in a storm of emotions (emotional regulation). We keep ourselves regulated, so that we can regulate together ... this is where that fancy term "co-regulation" comes into play. Where one person is teaching the other how to regulate together, so that person can learn the skills and strategies themselves. Of course, this is all much easier said then done - there are no magic wands in parenting. Just remember, throwing yourself on the floor and screaming with your child might be exactly what you need, but it's best to save that for an empty field. Calm brings calm (eventually) and chaos (usually) adds more chaos.
Want a sustainable way of introducing co-regulation and self-regulation into your home? Reach out, I'd love to help!
