The 3 Stages to Transform Your Child's Reading Skills
Most students encounter challenges in decoding text, not because of a lack of capability, but often due to being equipped with ineffective strategies. It's similar to a sports team preparing for a crucial match with the wrong game plan—it's frustrating and unlikely to lead to success.
How can you identify if your child is using the wrong strategy to decode text? It's quite simple. Do any of these scenarios sound familiar?
Lack of Phonemic Awareness: Does your child have trouble breaking down words into individual sounds? This can impede their decoding skills, making reading a challenging task.
Difficulty with Word Recognition: Is your child struggling to recognize and understand words, hindering their ability to decode texts fluently? This frustration is a common sign of an ineffective decoding strategy.
Slow Progress in Reading Fluency: Have you noticed that despite consistent effort, your child's reading fluency isn't improving as expected? This may be a result of an inefficient strategy affecting their decoding abilities.
Recognizing these challenges prompted me, as a teacher, to reassess and reshape my approach. The result? The development of the Repeated Reading method, a transformative strategy that has yielded incredible results with my students.
Here's a glimpse of what your child needs to focus on:
Stage 1 - Enhance Phonemic Awareness: Build a foundation by helping your child enhance their ability to break down words into individual sounds. This stage is crucial for effective decoding.
Stage 2 - Build Word Recognition: Move to the second stage to strengthen your child's word recognition skills. This step further supports their decoding proficiency.
Stage 3 - Foster Reading Fluency: Seal the deal with this final stage, ensuring that your child not only decodes words but also reads with fluency and comprehension. This step is vital for a complete and fulfilling reading experience.
These three stages are fundamental in guiding your child toward learning to read, much like a boxer preparing for a world championship fight. When armed with the right strategy, their chances of success increase dramatically.
