“Blackbird singing in the dead of night / Take these broken wings and learn to fly / All your life /
You were only waiting for this moment to arise”
The U.S. civil rights movement inspired Paul to write this song. He wrote ‘Blackbird’ at his Scottish farm to express his support for black Americans struggling for equal rights, particularly women (“bird” is British slang for "woman").
He later explained that he chose a more poetic approach to the song – rather than singing “black woman living in Little Rock” – so that listeners could apply its message to their own lives.
