Jardin communautaire Vanier Community Garden A volunteer based community garden in Vanier's Richelieu Park. The garden consists of 36 individual plots. 34 plots are available to Vanier residents.

The Vanier Community Garden is situated in Richelieu Park, beside the Richelieu-Vanier Community Centre, providing a pleasant green space that is full of life for public enjoyment. Led by a volunteer group of Vanier residents, and supported by the City, local businesses, community organizations and schools, the Vanier Community Garden was established in 2010. Members

are able to produce local, fresh, nutritious and affordable food using natural and sustainable methods. One plot is managed by volunteers who grow food for the Partage Vanier Food Bank, while another plot is maintained for the enjoyment of all Vanier residents. Individual garden members – all Vanier residents – were initially selected in an open lottery in the spring, 2010. While the garden is now full, Vanier residents who would like a plot are able to register their name on a waiting list. Plots will be allocated to new members on a first-come, first-served basis. Many individuals and organizations came together to establish the garden; today, the garden includes a tool shed, composters, water barrels and a variety of garden tools purchased for the use of all. Le Jardin communautaire de Vanier est situé dans le parc Richelieu, derrière le Centre communautaire Richelieu-Vanier. Le jardin fournit un espace vert plein de vie pour le plaisir de ses membres et du public. Un groupe de bénévoles, appuyé par la Ville, des commerçants locaux, des organismes communautaires et des écoles, a mis sur pied le Jardin communautaire de Vanier en 2010. Aujourd’hui, des membres ont permis de cultiver des aliments frais, nutritifs et abordables en utilisant des méthodes biologiques et durables. Le jardin se compose de 36 bacs individuelles. 34 bacs sont disponibles pour les résidents de Vanier. Une autre bac est gérée par des bénévoles qui font pousser des aliments pour la banque alimentaire Partage Vanier, tandis qu'une autre bac est maintenue pour la jouissance de tous les résidents de Vanier. Les membres du jardin, tous des résidents de Vanier, ont été choisis lors d’une loterie au printemps, 2010. Alors que le jardin est maintenant complète, les résidents de Vanier qui voudraient un bac sont capables d'enregistrer leur nom sur une liste d'attente. Les bacs seront affectés à de nouveaux membres sur le principe du premier arrivé, premier servi. Plusieurs organismes et particuliers se sont donné la main pour établir le jardin; aujourd’hui, le jardin comprend une remise à outils, composteurs, des barils d'eau et une variété d'outils de jardin achetée pour l'usage de tous. Lynda Fish has created a birthday fundraiser in support of the Jardin communautaire Vanier Community Garden.

Dear friends/Chers amis,

This March 7th is truly a special birthday for me! In celebration, I have decided to host a birthday fundraiser in support of the “Jardin communautaire Vanier Community Garden”, a non-profit organization that is very near and dear to my heart. For over 15 years, the garden has provided a space for neighbours to grow together while combating food insecurity. I spend many fulfilling hours gardening there during the summer so that it then nourishes me over the winter.

We are greatly in need of funds to replace 26 rotting wooden garden boxes with new metal boxes that will stand up better against the elements over time.

This community garden means a lot to me. Whatever amount you might be able to contribute will be greatly appreciated, and I thank you. Un gros merci.

While we use the Jardin, it is important to realize we are interlopers to this land. There are many others using the same land close to the Jardin. Foxes, cayoties, and other wildlife.

In Canada's capital (and across the country), compostable products are extremely likely to be screened out of municipal green bin collection and tossed in landfills, where they emit a much more potent contributor to climate change than carbon dioxide as they fail to break down as intended.
