One of the most life-changing experiences in my business was having the honour to support the Tłı̨chǫ Peoples as they developed curriculum for their language revitalization course in Behchokǫ̀, Northwest Territories.
The first time I arrived in their homelands, something in me softened.
I felt like I was home. The Land. The cold. The Northern store. Ski-doos everywhere. The kind of close-knit community where you can feel how people belong to each other.
I had the privilege of visiting four times, and that familiarity—my understanding of northern life—helped me build real trust with the Knowledge and Language Keepers and Elders. It became a familiar, beautiful place where we created something that will hold future generations.
The teachings they shared with me changed me forever.
This curriculum was years in the making, and it was a deep honour to help bring it across the finish line. A few months after we completed our work together, they graduated a handful of learners from the course.
I still think about that moment, because what they were doing wasn’t just “a program.” It was reclamation. Their language and Ways of Knowing are powerful, living, and inherently spiritual.
Language back is part of our revolution. It doesn’t just restore how we communicate, but how we understand and receive the world. It’s life-force. The bridge between our Ancestors and our children.
