Carleton Humanities Social Society Fostering community within Carleton's College of Humanities. The College of the Humanities is a unique and special place in both Ottawa and the world.

During our time here as students, we are moved to question, improve, and move towards the educated, good, individuals we strive to be. Equally important and valuable to our own self­ development as the books we read are the conversations and interactions we have with our peers, conversations which cause us to question our own ideas and broaden our understanding. Given the importance of these frien

dships and discussions, we hope to foster an atmosphere of collegiality amongst all students within the college through the creation of the Humanities Student Societies. By creating six groups of students from all years of the program, and one group for alumni and professors, we aim to connect students of all years with each other and within the communities they are a part of. This will be accomplished through events and activities designed to engage students with others in the program as well as with the Carleton and Ottawa communities. By building these inter-­year relationships our aim is to create an inclusive and cohesive program while also presenting the students with opportunities for leadership, personal growth, and mentorship.Overall the goal of the Humanities Societies is to make each student’s time in the program a positive one by facilitating the building of meaningful relationships with their fellow students, professors, faculty, and alumni. These relationships will not only make the students’ time in their undergrad more enjoyable, but will present opportunities for networking and community involvement in the future.

All-year pizza party details: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th year students are invited to attend a pizza party in Brewer Park (located directly across from the university via Bronson ave) at 5:30pm on Tuesday, September 7th.

*all students will be asked to wear masks to the event, and to only remove them when they are actively eating/ drinking.

Angel Xing (she/her), this year’s HSS secretary, is going into her second year of journalism and humanities, and she's worried about the geese on campus. She loves things that are good for her, like reading, petting dogs, and basking in the sun. Amarige Trottier (she/they) is the Humanities Social Society’s Vice-Chair for the 2021-2022 academic year! They loved planning events as a year-representative, and look forward to working on more inter-year events to foster a deeper sense of community within the Humanities department✨

Amarige is completing a combined honours in Humanities and Anthropology, and aspires to continue on in academia to obtain a Master’s (and perhaps a Ph.D.) in Anthropology. She loves to write music & practice playing her multitudes of instruments, including, but not limited to, the electric bass, lyre, & piano. In their free time, they are a film columnist, poet, and meme-maker. Austina Yu (she/her) is the Chair of the Humanities Social Society for the 2021-2022 year! During her past two years in HSS, she has enjoyed planning events and connecting with the humanities community. This year, she hopes to continue well-loved traditions while introducing new and exciting ideas.

Austina is a third-year journalism and humanities student. She also works as a Community Developer in Carleton Residence, planning events and other initiatives for students living on campus. In her free time, she likes making art, playing music, and picking up countless new hobbies. If you see her around, don't hesitate to say hi and introduce yourself!
