Nothing quite says "Chamber Orchestra" like 7 folks in the bass section. 🥸
Ottawa Chamber Orchestra
Doug Murphy is one of five trained Suzuki bass teachers in eastern Canada. He has over 45 years of orchestral experience and teaches from his home studio.
Doug was introduced to the Suzuki Method of pedagogy when his own children were small. He was enticed to play with ensembles at Suzuki events and summer Institutes, so has seen the results first hand. He has now retired from his full-time job, and can devote time and passion to sharing the Suzuki Method with bass students in the Ottawa area. Doug is fluently bilingual, and is one of only 3 Suzuki trained bass teachers in eastern Canada.

If you can sound like Christian, then that's already enough!
If I never get to be on Sesame Street, I’ll take this! 😂😂😂 Thanks, ! 😂😂
We're into the home stretch for planning the 2022-23 school year!
Tonight I taught for the first time using a combination of Jamulus (for sound) and Zoom (video only), due to our latest lockdown.
The Jamulus platform doesn't filter, so the rich sound of bass E string came through clearly, and we had negligible lag, so could play together.
However, my student heard quite a pronounced echo on his end because he was on a wifi connection.
Clearly more refining needed, but much better than straight Zoom.
Happy Diwali and best wishes for the new year to my friends and family that are celebrating. Wishing you prosperity and wealth of knowledge in life. 🌸

All the great things you love about summer institutes are coming back again, although we will also offer some things online. Details to be announced.

An unusual violin, certainly.
A Giant Violin Floats Down Venice’s Grand Canal This 39-foot-long instrument, built by local artisans and carrying musicians performing a live concert, sets a course for the future.
This past week saw me back in class, doing Suzuki Bass book 5 teacher training. The only problem was that I didn't learn that I'd have the week off from teaching until after the audition desdline had passed. This means that I can't officially register the course with Suzuki Association of the Americas.
It was well worth it!
Something important is happening this Sunday!

This is good news. So now, go and practise 15 minutes :-)
Study says music takes 13 minutes to ‘release sadness’ and 9 to make you happy The fascinating new research proves that music heals and suggests that in future, music could be prescribed to help us focus, feel happier, relax and overcome sadness.

Normally this recit would be a solo, but we do learn to play nicely together.
