Grounded in the Orton-Gillingham approach, these structured, step-by-step programs are designed to support students with dyslexia and specific language disorders.

Whether you are an educator or a parent, this training will equip you with practical, effective strategies to support struggling readers and writers with confidence and clarity.

Yesterday, after three years of EMS, I was advised that my 12 year old son, who was still illiterate by grade 4, is now at grade level!!🥳

🥳🥳🥳 When the teacher spoke those words, I cried heavily because I was told my son would never read or write...
For the record, i never agreed with the schoolboard or any of the other naysayers about my sons abilities. Against their advice, I stuck to my guns and consistently applied the Orton-Gillingham based SMT/EMS program 3-5 days week for the past three years. I'm very happy I listened to the sage advice of Louise Brazeau Ward, a fellow dyslexic, who is the developer of EMS and the founder of Heritage Academy. I truly believe us dyslexics know best!!!
Although the schoolboard, Dyslexia Canada and the Ontario Dyslexia Association Ontario/ ONlit tried to discredit EMS--which prevented EMS from being used as a free resource at my sons school--I continued with it at home, religiously. And I am so happy I did! Merci Louise!!

Dear School Board Directors

Every student deserves the chance to learn how to read and write, yet thousands of children with language-based learning disabilities, such as Dyslexia and specific Learning Disability (SLD), continue to struggle without the support they need.

The Ontario Human Rights Commission’s “Right to Read” Inquiry made it clear: literacy is not just a fundamental skill; it is a human right.

The findings called on all school boards to implement evidence-based, accessible, and inclusive reading instruction that meets the needs of all students.

At the Heritage Academy Dyslexia Centre (HADC), we help school boards meet this need by offering educator training in two highly effective and easy-to-implement programs:

● Simultaneous Multisensory Teaching (S.M.T.) – English
● Enseignement Multisensoriel Simultané (E.M.S.) – French

These programs are based on the Orton-Gillingham approach and are designed for classroom and resource teachers to support struggling readers using structured, sequential, and multisensory strategies. They can be used for prevention and intervention, from Kindergarten to adults.

Available in Both Official Languages

E.M.S. uniquely fills the gap for French-language support, especially in Francophone and French Immersion schools.

Provides bilingual school boards with a consistent, inclusive framework across both English and French programming.

E.M.S. is one of the only Orton-Gillingham-based multisensory programs available in French, filling a critical gap in literacy support for French-speaking students.

S.M.T. and E.M.S. directly support the OHRC’s calls for:

Early screening and intervention
Explicit, systematic phonics instruction
Support for students with reading disabilities
Culturally responsive and linguistically accessible materials

Multisensory and Structured
Both programs utilize visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile strategies to enhance phonological awareness, reading fluency, spelling, and written expression. Students not only improve academically but also gain confidence and motivation.

We invite all school boards to join the growing number of educational leaders across Canada who are investing in their staff's ability to support every learner, because reading is not a privilege; it is a right. SMT (Simultaneous Multisensory Teaching) Method is an Orton-Gillingham-based program used by the Heritage Academy Dyslexia Centre.

The SMT Method is rooted in the Orton-Gillingham principles. It focuses on multisensory, explicit, and systematic instruction to teach literacy skills to students with dyslexia and other learning challenges.

The program heavily incorporates auditory, visual, and kinesthetic activities to engage students in learning.

The SMT Method is designed for students with dyslexia, learning disabilities, and other language-based learning challenges, including those who have struggled with traditional education approaches.
