This outstanding performance of Mahler's 2nd Symphony marked the end of the 2025-2026 season of the NAC Orchestra and the 11-year leadership of Alexander Shelley as Music Director and Principal Conductor! The NAC Orchestra is by far the best orchestra in Canada at the moment! The performance received 15 minutes of standing ovations!

Today my father – the composer Krasimir Kyurkchiyski – would have turned 90 years old.

He possessed an immense musical talent, an incredible spirit, an artistic soul, and an uncompromising character.

He spoke directly and sincerely, never seeking public approval. Yet, behind the facade of his resolute opinions and apparent impatience lay a profound sensitivity. He was exceptionally unpretentious – always ready to befriend anyone he connected with, regardless of their social status. He absolutely adored humor, both in life and in art.

A passionate reader, a wonderful culinary artisan, and a skilled winemaker, he also possessed an innate talent for interior design; furniture and bookshelves were custom-made entirely from his personal blueprints. He was also an avid sports fan – a devoted supporter of Levski, who watched football matches with immense pleasure. His musical taste knew no boundaries either: he loved everything from classical and folklore to jazz and pop. Beyond the classical stage, he sincerely admired Oscar Peterson and Whitney Houston.

His entire world, however, was subordinated to his most sacred love – music. That was where his soul expressed itself most freely. When working on a project, he would spend hours on end at the piano, day after day. He was an absolute perfectionist.

As a child, my room was right beneath his studio. I was a witness to his entire creative process, hearing him play for hours until he uncovered the exact color of the melody and harmonies he was searching for. That was how I listened to the birth of the "First Piano Concerto" (dedicated to Pancho Vladigerov), the ballet "The Goat Horn", the opera "A votre santé", the orchestral variations on a theme by Handel, the piano variations on the song "Polegnala e Todora", and dozens of magnificent arrangements of Bulgarian folk songs.

Through his body of work, "The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices" choir brought glory to Bulgaria, clinching the world's highest musical honor – the Grammy Award in 1990 for "Best Traditional Folk Album".

Some of my most cherished memories remain the moments when he would call me up to his study to share the magic of what he had just written during the day.

My father left behind a monumental musical legacy. His folklore arrangements are timeless masterpieces. My personal favorites will always be "Kalimanku Denku", "Pilence p*e" (A Little Bird Is Singing), "Dilmano, dilbero", and "Zableyalo mi agance" (A Lambkin Has Begun to Bleat).

Today, seeing his work live a new life across the internet all over the world – in the most diverse and unexpected arrangements, from pop to techno – fills my heart with pride. I am overjoyed that his soul continues to resonate through music!
